too much encryption

Being a lazy Saturday, we enjoyed our time around the house. I balanced the checkbook and did the monthly automobile asset depreciation. What I do is (mostly) every month, I check the Kelley Bluebook value of our cars given the current mileage and update the car's asset-value in Money with the new amount. This ensures that the car is valued correctly when taking into account our overall assets. Some might consider this to be excessive but I like to be accurate.

I also did the quarterly backups. I take data retention very seriously and in addition to doing daily backups locally, I also make sure that we have 'offsite' quarterly backups on external HDs that we store somewhere else. This ensures that if we have a total disaster ( i.e. house burns down, nuclear event), we are at most only three months behind.

Next, I did some tinkering with a couple of new programs that I've been wanting to play with for a while. The first program, KeePass, is an ecrypted database to store passwords and other secure information. A common problem that most people face with multiple logins is that they usually end up only using one of a few passwords and recycle it everywhere. This is very dangerous because if that password is compromised, odds are that multiple secure points are compromised as well.

One of the many useful features of KeePass is that it will generate random passwords for you. You can specify the length and content of the passwords. For example, if you want a 32-character alphanumeric password, it can do that for you. If you need more variety (like special charcters, high-ascii characters, etc), it can also do that for you too.

Another really cool feature of KeePass is that it can 'autocomplete'. What that means is that once you specify a username/password combination for a website, for example, it can (with a keyboard shortcut) automatically post the username/password & log you in. This is really cool.

All of this is protected by a 'master password'. So you only need to worry about knowing one secure password to gain access to a database full of passwords. The database is encrypted with AES (or Twofish) level encryption which is pretty sure.

Next is a program called TrueCrypt. It's also very slick. It can create a 'realtime' encrypted volume. Like KeePass, it uses a 'master password' and optionally a 'keyfile' to unlock the encrypted volume. I decided to create a small, ultra-secure, encrypted volume to hold the KeePass database along with some other things. Instead of using 'just' AES-level encryption, I went with a triple-level ciper which is a layered approach with the serpent, twofish, and AES ciphers. I protect it with a strong-password and secret keyfile. The keyfile is some 'random' file on the hard drive that only I know about.

So an attacker would need to know more than just my password to gain access – they would also need to know the 'secret' keyfile as well. Now this is probably overkill and I might change it down the road, but for now it is fun.

Using my newfound knowledge and appreciation for encryption, I decided to encrypt the external HDs I use to backup our data for the quarterly backups. I use a keyfile that lives only on the ultra-secure truecrypt volume I created.

By doing this, the contents of the HDs are garbled unless they are unlocked with the password and keyfile. This also ensures that on one can access the data on them if the HDs were to fall into the wrong hands.

new house guest

We’ve had Sydney for a week now and it’s been nice. We did find out that taking care of a dog impedes on doing things that we would normally not think twice about. For example, leaving the house isn’t as easy as it used to be because we need to think about Sydney.

However, Katie and Chris came home from Illinois tonight and were bringing Jennifer’s nine-year-old cousin, Jessica, with them. We made arrangements for Jessica to stay with us for a couple of weeks.

Late tonight, around 11:30pm, Katie and Chris came over. They didn’t stay long. They dropped Jessica off and picked up Sydney.

It should be interesting to see how it is taking care of a nine-year old girl for two weeks.

full house

Because tomorrow is the 4th of July, I also had off from work today too.  It wasn't a relaxing day though.  We had a lot going on.

Jessica spent her first night over last night.  It went well.  I anticipate it being a lot of work over the next two weeks while she stays with us.  But since Jen isn't working right now she has a lot of free time and is looking forward to the challenge and experience.

Today we drove over to Buckhead to pick up Jennifer's cousin Don and his son Robinson.  They are in town to run the Peachtree Road Race tomorrow with us.  They were waiting for us outside of a buckhead hotel.  It was one of the hotels that they had a runners expo for people who will be running the race tomorrow.

Don and Robinson piled into the car and we headed towards home.  We were all pretty hungry and collectively decided to stop at Willy's for some lunch.  This really hit the spot.

Once we got back home, we all sort of relaxed and hung out.  I think Robinson took a nap.  Eventually we got prepared to head out for dinner at Jen's parent's house.

We drove over there and met up with Jen's parent's.  Katie & Scott were not present.  We had a grilled salmon salad.  I was manning the grill and used the cool new fish basket thing which worked out really well.

After dinner we left Jessica to stay at Jen's parents house and took Don and Robinson back home.  We all made it to bed early in preparation for the race tomorrow.

Jul 4th 2006

peachtree road race

Today is the 4th of July.  It's also the day that Jen and I are running in our first ever race.  We woke up very early and had a quick bite to eat for breakfast.  Don and Robinson were already awake and ready to go.

We packed up some belongings and headed out.  It was still so early that the sun had not come up yet.  We drove to my office downtown and parked, for free, in the parking lot that I use every day.

It was only about a 3-block walk to the peachtree center Marta station where we bought some fare cards to get us to the buckhead Marta station.

Where we got on, it wasn't that crowded and we were all able to find a seat.  As we proceeded north along the line more and more runners piled onto the train.  By the time we got to our stop, it was super packed.  That station was filled to the brim with runners milling about.

We followed the throngs of people up the escalators to the street level and walked over towards Lenox MallPeachtree street was already blocked off as the wheelchair road race was already in progress.  The wheelchair race happens before the road race.

Since there are so many people running this race (I think over 50,000), they have everyone split up into nine of ten 'groups'.  Each group started the race in a staggered fashion.  I think it's about 10-15 minutes between each group.

It happens that all of us were assigned the last group so we had to hike really far away to the back of the mass of 50,000 people and wait.

We waited a very long time just standing around with thousands of other people.  It was actually quite boring.  Finally we all started to shuffle up to the starting line which was about 5 blocks away.

The amount of people running today was staggering and we were pretty much at the very back of the mass of people.  Indeed when we started I turned around and saw the street cleaning machines and cleanup crews coming just behind us to take down the portable fences, barricades, and clean the streets.

Don and Robinson ran off ahead of us and we agreed to meet at a certain place in Piedmont Park afterwards.  I promised Jen that I would run alongside her the entire race.  I wasn't planning on going fast but I thought that I would be able to actually run.

I think the first mile was basically walking fast since there were so many people and they weren't moving very fast.  Slow-moving people were supposed to keep to the right side and fast-moving people were supposed to keep to the left side.

When we were actually able to start moving quicker than a fast walk, it became increasingly frustrating to be jogging along in the mass of people and then the knot of 'runners' in front of you decide that they are doing to start walking or just simply stop in the middle of the road.  With so many other people around, you can't easily move past them to the left or the right because there is no room.  You are forced to stop running until an opening appears.

This is what it was like, to me, to run the Peachtree Road Race.  I described it to someone as tyring to jog through a very crowded mall.  I hate moving through a mall or some other crowded place only to have people stop in the middle of the walkway, clogging up everything for everyone else.

It was also hot out.  But I digress to much in my complaining.  I had no idea what to expect from running this 10K but I did have higher expectations than this.

Jen and I half-jogged, half-walked though the finish line for the 'race' and made our way through the processing lines where we collected our shirts.  We met up with Don and Robinson and drank some water and sat around for a while.

Finally we decided to head out.  We walked through the park and towards the exit that led to the Marta station about six blocks away.  As we left the park, we got separated from Don (he has a tendency to dash off and look at things).  We all stopped and searched for him.  He reappeared about fifty feet behind us and nodded as if he were coming to join us.  We turned around for about ten seconds and then looked for him again.  He was gone!  Nowhere to be found.  We were confused.  I looked around frantically for Don and couldn't find him.  We were certain he didn't pass us so we didn't know where he went.

Robinson told us that he always disappears and that we should just wait for him.  We waited, and waited - for an hour.  He never materialized.  This was pretty frustrating.  None of us had cell phones so we had no way of communicating with him.  We decided to make our way to the Marta station in hopes that he somehow passed us up and for some strange reason went on without us.

Sure enough Don was waiting for us near the Marta station.  Marta is really messed up.  Some stations deal only in fare cards.  Some other stations deal only in tokens.  None of the stations seem to sell both.  So we bought a fare card from the station downtown but this station doesn't do fare cards.  They don't do tokens.  What a complete mess.  And they wonder why more people don't use Marta.

After leaving the house at 6am we got home at around 5pm.  This was for a 1.5 hour race.  I'm not sure where all of the other time went.  We took a shower and then took a nap for a couple of hours.  Then we woke up and got ready to head out again.

We drove up to Jen's parent's house again to have dinner in celebration of the 4th of July.  It was a nice day out today once we were in the shade.  We had sausage & burgers.  I really enjoyed the food.

After dinner we went to the neighborhood pool where Jessica and Robinson played in the water.  It was a nice evening.  Later, we went back home.  Don and Robinson spent the night at our place again and Jessica remained at Jen's parent's house.

day at the lake for some

While I was at work today, Jen took Don and Robinson to lake Lanier to meet up with Jessica and Jen’s dad. They went out on the boat and had a nice summer day at the lake.

After being at the lake all day long, Jen dropped Don and Robinson off at a marta station so that they could go to the airport and fly back to Minnesota.

Because it’s Wednesday, it is game night for me. It is also ‘girls night’ for Jen and she was hosting this week. I left as Jen was prepping to host for a bunch of girls.

Chris’s game tonight was a lot of fun and pretty intense. We were in an alley of mazes and had some really tough battles. Joon’s character nearly died. I was also thinking about rolling a backup character for Nokie and think that I want to have an archer-type of character. I’m pretty excited about it.

Jul 7th 2006

sundial

Last night Jen and I put stuff around the house for Jessica to find today. Today is her 9th birthday and she had a fun scavenger-hunt today to find presents. It was pretty fun.

Jen made reservations to have lunch today at the ‘Sundial’ restaurant in downtown. I happen to work just a couple of blocks from there so around noon today I walked over to the Westin hotel (where the Sundial is on top of) and met them.

Luch was great. The last time I’ve been up in a skyscraper restaurant was in San Antonio years ago when my grandparents took me for my birthday. The food was good (I had a chicken-salad sandwich) and wasn’t nearly as expensive as I thought it would be. The views from the rotating restaurant were spectacular too. We had a great time and I think that Jessica loved it too.

The only downside was riding up 74-floors in the glass elevator. I’m still a little nervous about heights. After lunch Jen and Jessica went to the movies and saw ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 2’.

After I got home from work we all went up to Jen’s parents house to have a birthday dinner for Jessica. We had pork chops and corn. For desert we had a frozen yogurt birthday cake from Brewster’s for Jessica’s birthday (she’s lactose intolerant). Katie and Chris were also there and were in good spirits.

Jul 8th 2006

plans within plans

Jen and I did a bunch of chores around the house today. We also did laundry and watered plants.

Later we finalized our plans to go to Texas over the labor day weekend. I did a lot of research to find cheap airfare and thanks to kyak.com I was able to create an itinerary such that we will fly into San Antonio on Friday night and then fly out of Houson (IAH) on Tuesday. As a result, I’ll take a vacation day on the Tuesday after labor day.

The airfare for this trip came to $315 for each of us. This was really hard to swallow. It costs $630 to do something that was previously free. After booking airfare, I emailed Larry and Dad about our plans.

Later this afternoon I played with a cool new video game. Jen and I went to Orient Express for dinner and sat outside. It was a nice evening.

Jul 9th 2006

dinner celebration

Jen and Jessica were gone most of the day today at some wedding shower for Katie. I’m so glad that I didn’t have to go. Instead I did a lot of work from home. I got a lot done actually. I have a work assignment to do some ‘shared story’ functionality and got most of it done.

In the late afternoon Jen came home alone. Jessica was staying at Jen’s parent’s house so that way Jen and I could have an evening alone together.

We went out to Stoney River for dinner to celebrate Jen’s job ending. It was a really nice time. I love Stoney River!

Jul 10th 2006

interesting news

Today was a pretty busy day. I wrapped up the remaining work on the shared story project I’ve been working on. It was pretty rewarding to have it all work correctly. I was also happy to get the experience tuning SQL queries. It was a pretty good day.

I had lunch today at Chow Baby with Melissa N., Brian S., Chuck C., and Gaile G. We had a nice time. It was at lunch that I learned about a decision for the restructuring & outsourcing plan for Delta Technology. It was actually pretty surprised by the news. They decided to outsource (to IBM) all server engineering and database work. I was expecting at least field services and help desk.

This news got me thinking. The primary reason why I left Delta was due to the uncertainty about the outsourcing thing, thinking that I would be affected.

Jul 11th 2006

six flags & osx

I took a PTO day (paid-time-off) today. This was my first time taking a day off from work. Jen and I took Jessica to Six Flags.

When we arrived I was shocked to see that they increased the price for parking to $15! What a rip-off!

It was a really fun day at Six Flags. We rode nearly all of the rides (even one of the water rides) except for Goliath (only because the line was too long) . Jessica was really great and willing to ride everything we wanted to.

It was fairly crowded, especially for a Tuesday but then again school is out and a lot of kids were here today. Jessica also played in the water park which was pretty boring for Jen and I. It was very hot outside today but nonetheless nice to have a day off from work.

After we got home, I spent the rest of the day playing with OSX 10.4.4. I wanted to install it on an old HD on the main desktop computer downstairs (freeside). I had some problems with the Asus P4PE motherboard nforce4 network adapter but once I found the correct driver, I was able to get networking enabled in OSX.

However I still had problems. I was not able to get the onboard ac’97 sound to work nor the ATI X1800 PCIe display adapter to work naively. This was most unfortunate. The setup isn’t solid enough to use actively.

Nonetheless, I had a lot of fun hacking around and learning about kexts. OSX looks really nice and simply going through this exercise made me seriously consider wanting to get an apple for the next computer purchase.

Later in the evening, Jen and I opened up a bottle of Santa Ema Merlot (2004 vintage) and made veggie burgers for dinner. Jen was extra nice and fried up some bacon to put on mine – how nice! We also had salads for dinner and some chocolate pudding for desert.

Jul 12th 2006

lunch at rolling bones

It was a pretty uneventful day except that I had lunch at ‘Rolling Bones’ with James W., Casey T., and Scott E. I had a great time caching up with them.

One of the things we talked about was the outsourcing decision for Delta Technology. Casey jokingly asked if I would want to come back now that application development was safe. I quietly told him that I may consider it. This set some things in motion.

Jul 14th 2006

busy, busy

It was another very late day at work for me. We have another big push and a lot was going on. I worked hard and long today.

Jul 15th 2006

birthday celebration

Today we celebrated Jen’s Mom’s birthday. They came over to our house and we had dinner. It was a pretty good time.

Jul 16th 2006

wedding shower

Today we went to a ‘couples’ wedding shower for Katie and Chris. Jen, Jessica and I drove up to a lawyer’s office somewhere in buckhead. Katie’s friend Katie W. was hosting it and was able to secure the location.

There were a lot of people at the shower, including Lisa & Alan, Clint and Erin, Lynne, and Drew and Rachel.

We took supplies to make mojitos (because that’s what Katie wanted). There was a lot of food including some great sandwiches. After eating, we did the thing where Katie and Chris were supposed to answer questions about each other. For every question they got wrong, they had to eat a piece of bubble gum.

Another game we played that was a lot of fun was that Katie had to be blindfolded and then all of the guys had to hike-up their pants so that she must feel, blindfolded, all of the guy’s legs and try to determine which one is Chris. Katie guessed correctly.

Jul 17th 2006

reminiscing about canada

It was another very busy day at work day. In fact it was so busy and stressful that I took a break and went over to my 2004 Canada trip photo gallery to look at photos from that wonderful trip.

I put it on slideshow and just watched as the absolutely beautiful pictures rolled by for about ten minutes. I think that these are some of my best work and the scenery is so beautiful. It also brought back some great memories.

That trip was so special. We hit the Canadian Rockies at just the right time and the weather was perfect. It’s also the trip where I proposed to Jennifer. What a great time.

After looking through those pictures I felt a lot better and more relaxed.

Shortly after I got home, Jennifer, Jessica, and I went out to dinner to M&T . Jen and I had a bottle of wine which was pretty good. Jessica had the chicken fingers from the kids meal and they were really good – some of the best chicken fingers I’ve ever had. We love M&T. It’s a great restaurant.

When we got back home, I dove into my work again and it took a long time to get completed. In fact it took a lot longer than I anticipated to get the work done that I was up until about 2:30am.

Jul 18th 2006

working lunch & wall of ice

Because I was up so late last night working, I decided to sleep in some this morning. I didn’t actually make it into work until about 10:30am. I had plans to met Casey & co for lunch but had to cancel on them because my team decided to work through lunch and management catered in some food from Ted’s. I had the wonderful buffalo meatloaf.

I left work around 4pm and grabbed a bite to eat shortly after I got home. I also left a little early to go to Clint’s house for our weekly gaming session. The gaming night today was actually really fun. Chris’s campaign is winding down and we were on what I think is one of our last battles.

My party fought the baron of the town that we’re adventuring in and we also battled the evil mindflayer that’s been controlling the baron. Unfortunately, my character, Nokie, was trapped behind a wall of ice from a bone devil and was unable to assist for the fight.

We stopped halfway through the battle and will pick up next week where we left off. It’s a lot of fun.

Jul 19th 2006

seed of ubuntu

Allen M. today asked me for some help with Ubuntu . He knew that I had some experience with Linux/Unix and was playing with Ubuntu on his spare machine at work in a VirtualPC session.

I helped out Allen and had fun with it. It’s nice to be an expert at something in this job since I’m still struggling with mastering ASP.NET.

After I helped Allen I thought about Ubuntu myself and decided that I would later play with it some and see how it compares with gentoo .

I was invite to lunch today with Allen M. and Scott E. for lunch. It made me feel good to start to be included and not an outsider. We went to the peachtree center and had Willy’s for lunch.

When I got home from work day Jen and I had chicken that I cooked outside on the grill. It was really good.

After dinner I was up really late (too late in retrospect) playing with Ubuntu Linux on the spare HD on freeside. I struggled to get both monitors (there is a 21-inch widescreen LCD Dell FPW2001 as well as an NEC 19-inch LCD) working correctly for a stretched-desktop.

I also had to add something to an obscure conf file (not in /etc) in order to enable the AC’97 toslink optical out sound to work.

Going through this exercise made me think a lot about operating systems: OSX, XP/Vista, and Ubuntu Linux. After a lot of careful consideration, I still think that XP/Vista is the best way to go.

Jul 20th 2006

consumerism

It was a very quiet day at work which was a welcomed change.

I had lunch with Allen M. and James at a bar-type burger place. It was just ‘ok’ food. I noticed that I’ve been invited to more lunches ever since I helped Allen with the Ubuntu thing. I guess that’s what it took.

Because it was so quiet today I had some free time. I thought a lot about my next DSLR purchase. I really like the Canon 5D but want to hold off until the next ‘version’ of that camera. I’m very excited about a full-framed camera.

I also finalized all purchases for Jen’s upcoming birthday. I hope she likes what I get her.

Around 5:30pm I left work today and went home to find that Jen’s cousin from Chicago, Brian, was in town and will be staying with us.

We all went to M&T for dinner and sat outside. It was really nice outside. We ordered a bottle of ‘root:1‘ Cabernet wine. I had a salad for dinner (I couldn’t do the pork & bacon sandwich since I had such a heavy lunch). It was a really great time and I think that Jessica liked it too.

After dinner we headed back home and Brian headed out to his hotel. Jen and I read a few chapters of ‘Charlotte’s Web’ for Jessica before she went to bed.

Jul 21st 2006

build 5472

I slept in again today before going to work. It was another very quiet day at work which was actually very nice since it’s been so very busy the past few months.

Allen M. and I talked some more today about Ubuntu linux . Actually he switched to Kubuntu – I think because the KDE GUI interface is more welcoming to people familiar with windows. It’s really fun being able to help out & explain things about linux since that’s something I’m really familiar with.

A lot of people I work with went out to Rusan’s for lunch today. I was quite happy because I love sushi and this was a sushi buffet. It is even more exciting that they have Ungai (eel) nigiri which is my absolute favorite.

Due to the ‘summer hours’ program and because it was slow today, I left work at about 3:30pm. When I got home I played with Vista build 5472. Like all of the news sites are reporting, this interim post-beta-2 build is much nicer than beta2 was.

We all left for Jen’s parents house with Jessica at around 6:30pm – Jen drove. Jen’s cousin Brian, Jen’s grandmother, Katie, Chris, and Jen’s parents were there.

For dinner we had pasta, salad, and mashed potatoes. It was a nice dinner. After dinner we played Cranium. I think Katie and Chris won by a wide margin. We stayed late and didn’t leave until about 10:30pm.

When we got home, Jessica went to bed and I talked with Jen a bit before she went to bed too. I stayed up not being too tired and played some more with Vista . I lost track of time and stayed up very late.

Jul 22nd 2006

bachelor party

Jen was stressing out this morning. She was hosting a bachelorette party for Katie and had a lot to do. It was more difficult because Jessica spending the summer at our place and we had to entertain her. Jen had a lot to finish so I helped as much as I could.

I left with Jessica around 1:30pm to drive down to the airport in order to pick up Lara, Jessica’s Mom, who flew in to participate in the bachelorette party. We collected Lara from the airport and I deposited her and Jessica at our house but didn’t go inside. Jen told me that I was forbidden to enter the house once I came back.

So I left and drove to Clint’s house. Clint, Chris, and a bunch of other people were already there. They were playing an FPS (some derivative of Call of Duty ) on Chris’s Xbox 360 . I tried to play but wasn’t very good with the controller. I’m much better with a mouse and keyboard.

I brought along my own Crown Royal in a flask since Clint had only beer. So I had a red bull as well as a crown & coke.

More people showed up as the day went on. We played some darts and pool and it was a fun & relaxing time. Chris seemed to be doing really good too. Some of the other guys were playing poker and smoking cigars out back.

I changed and we all went out to dinner to Olde Mill Steakhouse on Cobb Parkway. I had the prime rib but didn’t care much for it. I need to remember that I don’t like prime rib that much. Dinner was mostly a meat & potatoes type of dinner. There were a lot of us – about twelve guys. We had a fun time.

After dinner we went back to the house and played some more on the Xbox. Eventually the taxis arrived and we headed out to midtown to go to the Cheetah . About ten of us went. Clint, Harold, and I went in a taxi together. I talked with Harold some during the ride and it turns out that he used to work for Turner a while back. He worked in an architecture role within Enterprise Applications.

We arrived at the Cheetah and met up with the rest of the guys. It was still early (about 9pm) and we all managed to crowd at a table. I ordered a $13 Red Bull & Vodka (before tip) and enjoyed it as much as I could.

The Cheetah was quite nice and we all had a really great time. Chris, who I found out had never been to a gentleman's club before, was as giddy as a schoolboy and was having a fantastic time.

After about two hours we all shuffled into the party room place. There was an open bar and a bunch of girls. Many lap-dances ensued. We all had a wonderful time. Tom bought me a lap-dance which was quite nice of him.

I had a much nicer time this time-around considering that I wasn’t plastered. It was a lot of fun. Most of us had a great time watching Chris get a ton of lap-dances. It was pretty funny how giggly he was from being so happy.

I had a couple of red bull & vodkas but not too much. I learned my lesson last time. After an hour in the party room we got kicked out (due to us only having it for an hour) and went back out to the main floor.

By this time it was extremely crowded on the main floor of the Cheetah and we were forced to sit in the back corner. There wasn’t much of a view here so it wasn’t that fun. Chris found one dancer in particular that he liked the most so we tried to get her to come give him lots of lap-dances. I had one or two more too.

We stayed for about another hour and then prepared to leave. Chris’s younger brother was completely wasted and couldn’t even walk. We all (eight of us by this point) piled into a small taxi van and headed back towards Clint’s house.

Four of us sat in the very back seat. I had one person between me and Chris’s drunk brother who was passed out on someones lap. As we got closer to Clint’s house, Chris’s brother got very sick – all over Clint’s roommate. The stench was unbearable. It was disgusting. Some of his vomit got on my pant legs.

We reached Clint’s house and all evacuated the smelly taxi. Clint gave the driver an extra $50 for the mess and we went inside. They put Chris’s brother to bed and the few remaining guys hung out in the living room and talked for a while.

I was feeling pretty safe so I headed out and drove the short distance home. I got home and went to bed. Jen was still in Athens with the girls for Katie’s bachelorette party. They were spending the night there.

Jul 23rd 2006

recharging

Jen got home around noon today. I woke up and we talked about our collective parties. Both groups seemed to have a great time.

We went out to Willy’s for a late lunch and stopped by Home Depot afterwards to buy some air filters and some spray paint. We also went to Barnes & Noble so that Jen could buy ‘The Devil Wears Prada ’ for the book club.

When we got home, Jen began to read the book. She fell asleep and we both took a little nap. I woke up and played with Vista some. There are still some application incompatibility issues but the same thing happened with the beta of XP too.

I also installed office 2007 beta 2 and found it to work really well. I love the ‘internet calendars’ functionality with Outlook – I can now tie into my google calendar.

Both Jen and I didn’t do much today. Jen read the entire book today – incredible. Jessica was also not here. It was a nice change of pace being just the two of us with no kid to take care of. The sunset today was really pretty so I took a photo of it.

Sunset

Sunset with flag

The power went out this evening around 10:30pm while I was playing (and winning) a game of chess against the computer. The UPS’s keps the two PCs (freeside and turing), monitor, router, gigabit switch, and DSL modem running (in addition to the tivo and second gigabit switch upstairs). I immediately put Vista into sleep mode to conserve power and then went upstairs.

I think that Jen gets annoyed when the power goes out because there is all of this beeping from all of the UPS's around the house. I used my laptop to log into the Georgia Power website to report the outage. The UPS in the living room only lasted about twenty minutes.

After 1.5 hours the power was still not back on and Jen and I got ready for bed in the dark (with candles), it was actually sort of nice. I logged into turing to cleanly shut it down since I didn't know how much time was remaining on the UPS and didn't want to risk a hard cutoff. Then I went to bed.

The power came back on around 2:30am. Some lights were still on around the house so I got out of bed and turned everything off. I also finished my chess game against the computer and decimated it. I felt so good to defeat the computer even if it was on the easiest difficulty level.

Jul 24th 2006

finally some calm

Because the power was out last night I set my blackberry to wake me up at 6:30am.  I was still quite tired and slept in some more.  When I woke up to take a shower and get ready, Jen was also getting ready.

Lara and Jessica came over before I left and we all had some breakfast.  Jen is taking them to the airport today so that they can go back to Illinois.

Work today was really quiet.  It's amazing how slow things seem after the push and constant coding from the past few months.

When I got home Jen was cooking dinner.  She made a really great vegetable stir fry - it was really good.  After dinner we watched an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.  After this I went downstairs to work on putting 'The Devil Wears Prada' on my iPod since the book club meeting is coming up soon.  I did all of this in Vista.  It worked pretty good but I found an annoying bug in which you can't edit details of users (picture, password, etc).  It was pretty frustrating.

dinner with friends

Lynne, Katie, Chris, Lisa, Alan, Jen, and I all met at Pappasitos for dinner tonight.  Jen did the call ahead seating but it didn't seem to get us a seat any faster than if we just tried to get seated normally.  We had a couple of pitchers of margaritas and of course the tasty chips & salsa.

I liked having dinner together with everyone and had a good time.  It was pretty loud in there though so I wouldn't like to go back to the same place next time we dosomething like this.

the devil wears prada

Today was our monthly book club meeting.  It was up at Tom's house and Tom, Terri, Kathleen, Katie, Chris, Lisa, Jen, and I were there.  Tom and Terri are great hosts.  This month's book is 'The Devil Wears Prada'.  I liked listening to the audiobook.  Tom served fried chicken, pasta salad, and deviled eggs that Terri made.  The deviled eggs were great!

clerks 2

Just after I got home today Jen and I left the house and drove over to the movie theater off of Cobb Parkway.  Along the way we stopped at the drugstore to buy some candy to eat during the movie.  I love candy!  We got there a little early so we stopped in Borders beforehand to browse.  Jen and I picked up a Sudoku book for Mom.

We met Tom, Terri, and Lynne in the lobby of the theater and got tickets to see Clerks 2.  The movie was ok.  Tom had a great time and was laughing more than anyone else in the theater.  I thought the scene with the donkey was really disturbing.

jens bithrday party

This morning Jen and I went to the gym for our weekly workout.  Jen went to her class while I ran on the treadmill and then lifted weights.  After going to the gym I made a tasty smoothie and shared it with Jen.

Not too long after getting home, Jen and I headed out again and drove up to Scott's house.  We visited with Scott for quite a while and helped him with his television dilemma.  He recently bought two different flat-screen TV's and can't decide which one to keep and which one to return.

Later, Jen and I drove up to her parent's house for dinner.  Tonight we are celebrating Jen's birthday.  Scott, Katie, Chris, Jen's parents, and Jen's grandmother were there.  We had salmon salad and a really good cake for desert.  Jen opened a lot of presents and had a pretty good time.

another birthday dinner for jen

It was a lazy morning for Jen and I.  We remedied that by going to the gym again today.  I should have had something to ear before we left because I was really hungry.  Just like yesterday I made a smoothie after we got home and shared it with Jen.We had about two hours before we were supposed to leave so I spent some time working on the computer.

Eventually it was time to head out.  Jen and I drove the back way to the buckhead area and went to Eclipse Di Luna where we made plans to meet Mom & Jim for dinner.  It was a nice tapas dinner, but I think Jen and I liked it better than they did.  We had a pitcher of mojitos.  I really like Eclipse Di Luna.  They gave Jen two cards and a gift certificate to Borders Bookstore.

After dinner we went over to The Cheesecake Factory to have some desert.  Despite being a Sunday night we had to wait about fifteen minutes for a table.  Jen ordered a chocolate martini and then shared a slice of key lime cheesecake.  We had a realy nice time.

dinner with friends at m&t

It was a pretty boring day at work today and nothing of note happened. I did make arrangements to take off on Friday. As soon as I got home Jen and I left for M&T to meet a bunch of friends for dinner. While we were driving over there we encountered a bunch of traffic and it took a while. Chris called to announce that he and Katie were going to have to cancel. He sounded a bit stressed so I think that he and Katie were having a bad day.

When Jen and I arrived at M&T, Scott and Lynne were already sitting at a large table outside. We joined them and ordered some cheese and wine. Lisa called Jen to cancel. Everyone was dropping out! Our wine arrived. It was a 2005 Argentenian Malbec and was pretty good. Scott ordered a second type of fancy cheddar cheese that was really hard. I like hard cheeses and this was no exception.

(Katie and Scott)

About an hour later Katie and Chris showed up after all. They looked a little frazzled but were in great spirits. I'm glad that they came. We all ordered food - sandwiches and salads). We all had a great time and spent another hour or so talking and enjoying the day.

As we were leaving, I took some photos of Katie and Chris for them to use at their wedding for guests to sign a framed picture of them. The background wasn't that great, but I used the 50mm to get in close and blur the background. I think it will look pretty good.

Scott came over to our house to hang out some more. We watched some episodes of 'Ask a Ninja' and had a good time with that. Eventually Scott left. Jen and I opened a bottle of fetzer Merlot and I processed the photos I took so that Jen could get them printed tomorrow for Katie since she is under a time crunch. It was a good day.
