2GB RAM

Jen left for the Gym this morning without me. I was sleeping in because I was tired from staying up late last night. I really need to go with her on Saturday mornings. This is the second week in a row that I have not gone with her.

When she got back home I had already changed the air filters, begun laundry, and flipped the mattress. We have a system where we flip the mattress every month. On even-numbered months we flip it on the long-axis and on odd-numbered months we flip it on the short axis.

Jen and I each took a shower and then headed out to take care of some things.

We drove up to Perimeter and stopped at Best Buy. We wanted to use the remaining balance on our gift card to buy another set of headphones like Jen got when we had our last horrible experience at Best Buy.

They didn't have the headphones we were looking for so we left. Next we drove to Costco. It was 1:15pm so Costco was pretty crazy (as it is always on the weekend). Jen bought a two-year supply of Contacts (she loves the FSA!) and we got some groceries and supplies.

After Costco we went to Jen's office to pick up a package. On Wednesday I bought another 1GB of RAM from Newegg and it arrived on Friday but Jen wasn't in the office so we got it today.

We headed back towards home and stopped at the Best Buy on Cumberland to check for those headphones. They had them. We bought the headphones and were happy to sever our ties with Best Buy.

When we got home I set out to work on installing the new RAM. For quite some time now the desktop computer (freeside) running WinXP hasn't been performing as well as I would like it to be.

The symptom was a ton of HD seeking whenever I would switch programs or switch users. This was really strange and I couldn't figure it out. Once I rulled out virus/spyware issues, I defragged and ran regclean. I also uninstalled a few old programs, cleaned up the things that autostart, and disabled a couple of non-needed services. The HD was only about 60% full.

This still did not fix anything. I began to suspect that the HD was misconfigured. I checked the BIOS settings as well as the controller settings in Windows and everything was set up correctly.

The system isn't that old

Motherboard: Asus A8N-E
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200 Winchester 200MHz FSB
RAM: Patriot 1GB DDR400 (PC3200) dual-channel 2-3-2-5 RAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon X800PRO 256MB GDDR3 PCIe
HD: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD4000KD 400GB 7200 RPM SATA-150 w/16MB cache

After some more research and not coming up with anything I came to the conclusion that the system is simply going to the pagefile way too often. I thought 1GB of RAM would be plenty and this wouldn't be an issue, but it is. When I would close down

So I was really curious to see if this RAM upgrade would solve any of these problems. It seemed the easiest and cheapest solution as I didn't think it was necessary to build a new system. I decided that if this doesn't work I'll re-install XP.

It was a piece of cake to install the two RAM modules. I got the same kind as before to ensure compatibility. When I got the sticks seated and the computer put back together, I messed around in the BIOS and changed a few settings. I noticed that the RAM was auto-detected as DDR333 and not DDR400. I switched to manual configuration and fixed this. I also decided to use the built-in BIOS 'AI Overclocking' at 10% faster speed. These settings didn't work - it would not boot, so I tried to lower the overclocking to 5% and it locked up during the boot screen of windows, so I just turned off the overclocking altogether.

Once that was taken care of I got into Windows and verified that the 2GB of RAM was detected. I also did some tests and was happy to see that it isn't paging nearly as much as it used to, even after coming out of a memory-hungry app like Oblivion.

I think that the problem is solved!

georgia aquarium

Jen was wide awake this morning when the alarm went off. She was poking me and acting silly. This woke me up. I love being woken up this way. I was running slow this morning and didn't make it out of the house until about 7:30am and arrived at work by 8am.

Like most days now I had lunch by myself today. I went outside and across the park to the good deli place and had a BLT while I read the newspaper. I miss having lunch with my co-workers.

One of the things I like it going outside during lunch time, especially around the park (Centennial Olympic Park) because there are always a lot of families and other happy people spread out enjoying the day. One of the downsides of this new job is that my cubicle is located in an area in which there is no easy access to a window. I never get to see what it is like outside unless I leave the suite and go into the atrium and then it is only a small glimpse through the skylights above.

I was pretty busy and worked hard all day long. Jeff H. came by around 1:30pm and said that I could leave at 2pm if I wanted - he was releasing everyone early in light of the holiday weekend and because traffic will be bad. So I left around 2pm.

Jen and I made plans for her to come to this part of town around 5:30pm so that we could go to the aquarium for the party tonight. She wasn't too excited about this idea and would rather that I drove.

So when I got home early she was pretty happy. I took a short nap and also called up Larry's house. Larry told me about him switching jobs and I wanted to get some more info. He wasn't online the past two or three days which indicated that he either wasn't at work or had already quit. When I called their house, Larry wasn't home but Amy was.

I spoke with Amy for about thirty minutes and got some more details about their plans to relocate to Houston.

Jen and I left the house around 5pm and drove back to where my office is in downtown. We parked at the Georgia Aquarium and went inside. Jen's company is throwing a going-away party for everyone at the Aquarium since they are ceasing operations very soon. We had free parking, admission, and a catered dinner tonight.

The Aquarium was very crowded when we got there at about 5:30pm. It was closing at 6pm so we had about thirty minutes of time with everyone else until it closed.

With the crowds I didn't care for the aquarium at all. It was simply too stifling with all of the people packed everywhere and kids running around and angry parents running into people with their fleet of strollers.

Eventually everyone left except for us and some of Jen's co-workers. We had special orange wristbands which allowed us to stick around after everyone else left.

Now that we had the place to ourselves, Jen and I had a much better time experiencing it. I think I was expecting it to be a little larger than it actually was.

The whales and large fish were fun to look at. My favorite was a type of sea-horse type fish that had what looked to be leaves all over them. This natural camouflage allowed them to blend in quite well.

jen took this photo of me
(jen took this photo of me)

Around 7pm we gained entrance to an exhibit that was closed earlier. It was the 'Ocean Voyager' exhibit with the large fish of all types. This was a pretty impressive exhibit - especially the part where you can walk through a tube with water all around and over you inside the glass tube.

There was a bar setup (we were given four drink tickets). Jen had some wine and I had a whiskey & coke. We mingled and talked with Jen's co-workers.

Eventually it was time to eat and a buffet-style line was setup where we could all fill our plates with good food.

Tables were a bit scarce so we had to go eat on high-top tables inside the glass tube. This was pretty cool because we could eat while watching all of the different fish (over 100,000) swim around overhead. I liked it. It was a bit rough not having any chairs though - we had to stand and eat. I would have preferred if we could sit.

The food was good - especially the sweet cornbread and one of the pastas that they had. Eventually we were all asked to go into another room for coffee and desert.

This room looked really cool. There was a huge viewing area into the same large tank that the tube goes under. We saw the same fish as earlier but it was cool seeing them from a larger area.

What followed was the company presentation about thanking everyone, etc. They ended with the video that Jen had worked on so much. She put in so many hours creating this special DVD montage of pictures of people and around the office. For the final product, someone else made some modifications to what she worked on but for the most part it was all her work. It was a little disappointing that Jen didn't get any recognition for putting so much work into the DVD.

We were pretty tired and went home around 10:30pm. It was nice meeting all of Jen's co-workers and putting some faces to people Jen's talked about a lot.

fun-filled saturday

I had a hard time waking up this morning but Jen was good about convincing me that we need to go to the gym to work out. We were running a bit late (she goes to a class at 9:45) so we had to double-time it over there.

While Jen was in her class, I ran on the treadmill for about 40 minutes while listening to Eye of the World by Robert Jordan on my iPod. It's quite nice working out while listening to the audio book.

After doing cardio work I lifted weights for about 30 minutes and then waited for Jen to get out of class.

We went straight home after going to the gym and made some tuna-fish sandwiches for lunch.

I spent pretty much the rest of the day playing Oblivion on the PC downstairs. It's a really fun game. Jen went out shopping while I did this. When she got home I helped unload the car and put groceries away. We planned on grilling fajitas today and marinated the beef and chicken early on.

Lisa came over in the afternoon. Her and Jen spent time catching-up and hanging out. Around dinner time I got the grill going and socialized with them too. Jen had the good salsa out along with my favorite lime-flavored tortilla cips.

We also all had mojitos. It was great. I grilled up the fajitas and the three of us sat outside together while we ate. It was a nice night outside.

easter sunday

I woke up this morning after Jen did. When I went downstairs, there was an easter basket out for me. Jen smiled and said that the easter bunny came by and left this for me.

Inside were some brand-new workout clothes as well as some candy. It was pretty exciting and I was happy to get all of these cool things. Jen's really good to me.

After breakfast, Jen watched one of her Netflix movies: 'Pride and Prejudice'. After the movie, we showered, dressed, and headed out to her parent's house.

When we arrived, Katie, Chris, Jen's Mom, and and Jen's Grandmother were already there. Jen's Dad wasn't home because he was working. We had a really nice Easter-Day dinner. We had salad, ham, potatoes, deviled eggs, and couscous that Jen brought. It was was all very good - especially the deviled eggs and potato casserole.

For desert, Katie made a hot peach cobbler with ice cream on top. It was also quite good.

We left around 5pm and went home. After getting home, I did some work on my company laptop using the desktop computer downstairs. I logged into the laptop with remote desktop and it worked quite well.

This mode of using my company laptop works perfectly for me. I can log into it from either the desktop or my personal laptop. The company laptop has a very small screen which isn't conducive to doing work in Visual Studio. If Jennifer needs to use the desktop, I can simple detach from the remote desktop session and re-attach from my personal laptop. Speed isn't really an issue since it is either on the gigabit LAN or the WiFi network.

I finally went to bed around 11:30pm.

code monkey

Work was incredibly busy today. I had deadlines so I was scrambling all day long and working as 'fast' as I possibly could. It was pretty stressful.

I had a quick lunch at the little deli place (Park Avenue Deli & Market) next to Centennial Olympic Park. Lunch by myself is really nice there because they have a lot of newspapers out for patrons to read. Normally I don't read newspapers since there is so much good info on the internet, but it is a nice way to pass the time when eating my tasty BLT.

I got a lot of work done, but still have a lot more to do, so it's going to be a really busy week. I'm really hoping that the day-in-day-out all-day coding marathons cool down after this project gets released because I'm not having a great time coding 100% of the time.

Jennifer had an interview today but I don't think she was super excited about the job.

About a week ago Jen and I ordered some new iPods. She got a 1GB iPod Nano for herself and a 1GB iPod shuffle for me. I'm pretty excited about my new shuffle. We bought these because we want to have something really light and small to take to the gym when we work out. The normal, larger, iPods we have are too heavy and bulky to use comfortably when running on the treadmill.

I opted to not get a Nano despite Jen telling me that it was only $50 more - everything Apple sells seems to go in $50 increments. I think Apple is smart in doing this because it gets people to spend hundreds of dollars more than they normally would have since every incremental step up is "only $50 more".

The main reason for not getting a nano is that I have a feeling that Apple will be releasing some higher-capacity versions of it soon. Right now the largest one they have is a 4GB model. With the flash memory prices plummeting like they are, it seems as if they should be selling the nano's at twice the current capacity for the same price.

dinner & wine

Shortly after I got home today, after a very long & stressful week, Jen and I decided to go out for dinner.

We thought a nice relaxing evening at Houston's would be a great way to end the week. We drove over to Houston's, valet-parked my car, and were seated right away.

Jen and I both had the veggie burger, but I had bacon added to mine - I love bacon! Along with dinner, we ordered a bottle of red wine. It was nice to relax, have a nice meal, and enjoy wine.

italian dinner

Like most Saturday's, Jen and I went to the gym this morning. I had a decent workout while Jen did her body shaping class with her friend Lisa.

Afterwards, we went shopping. We went to a lot of places. It was pretty rough - I can only take so much shopping before I start throwing a fit.

Later this evening we met Mom and Jim for dinner with two of their friends at a place called Sugo near the Roswell mill. It was a great Italian restaurant. We sat outside and had a couple bottles of wine - I had a great time.

Apr 23rd 2006

cheesy chuck norris action movie from the 80’s

Jen was out of the house most of the day doing some things with her mother and sister.

I took the opportunity to play around with the Xbox and upgrade the XBMC software to the latest version. I used to simply get the latest source code from CVS and compile using an automated tool that someone wrote. Unfortunately, however, sourceforge has been having major CVS issues for quite a while now so I haven't been able to get the latest source code.

Instead, I broke down and just downloaded a recent build of XBMC (the PIMPED edition build). That seemed to work well.

After I did this, I watched 'Invasion USA'. I remember it being much more entertaining when it first came out in 1985 (I was also 8 or 9 years old at the time too). Now, it wasn't that entertaining. Instead, it was very dark (not like a dark mood, but the technical quality of the film was dark and dingy).

I also called Dad to catch up with him and see how things are going.

Apr 29th 2006

running around

This morning Jen and I left the house and dropped off Katie's car at the saab dealership right next to Dobbins Air Force Base. Today was the day of the annual air show, so I was a little worried about traffic problems with dropping off the car and picking it up later.

Two or three years ago I was traveling up I-75 during the day of the air show and near the area where it took place, the highway was completely gridlocked. I think people were actually stopping and parking on the highway to watch the planes. It was really crazy. Because of this, I was worried about traffic problems picking up Katie's car after the work is done.

We drove over to LA Fitness off of Cobb Parkway (the Akers Mill location) and worked out for 1.5 hours. I've been trying to train for the upcoming Peachtree Road Race so while Jen has been in a body sculpting class, I've been running on the treadmill. Today I managed to run 10k in just under 71 minutes so I'm making good progress to finishing the race in my target time. After the lengthy cardio workout, I did some weightlifting.

After working out at the gym, Jen and I picked up Katie's car and headed home. On our way home, we went slowly to see some of the cool areal acrobatics of the planes in the airshow. Traffic wasn't a problem despite my fears.

Later this afternoon I drove over to Katie's house in order to swap her car with Jen's. Chris was there and he helped me roll up a character for an upcoming weekly gaming session that I've been invited to participate in.

Afterwards, Katie and I went out for dinner at a nearby Mediterranean restaurant. I've never hung out with Katie before just by myself. Dinner was good. I ordered an Indian dish to bring home to Jennifer.

When I got home Jen was working on a DVD for Lisa to play at her wedding. Jen went to bed early and I stayed up doing stuff on the computer.

Apr 30th 2006

entertaining

I love sleeping in, so it was nice to sleep in today. After waking up I made plans with Jen to go to Costco today since we are hosting a dinner party tonight. We had some lunch and then shortly after that Scott and his girlfriend Kristina came over.

All four of us left to go play some disc golf at Oregon Park in West Cobb. It was somewhat overcast outside when we arrived and as a result the course was fairly empty. As the day progressed, it got sunny and nice out.

We met Brad there and he informed me that my two discs were both putters, so he let me borrow one of his drivers. Brad knows about these things because he is pretty good at disc golf. In all, we had a great time playing and it was also a chance for Jen and I to get to know Kristina better as well.

After playing nine holes we decided to quit and stopped by Starbucks nearby for some coffee (I had iced tea). We parted ways with Brad and then headed to Costco. We bought some supplies for dinner tonight and I managed to sneak in a purchase of some good cookies too.

Once we were done at Costco, we went to a shoe store for Scott who was looking for a new pair of shoes. Finally we went home after that.

Jen and I began preparing for our large dinner tonight. Katie and Chris came over, followed by Jen's parents. This was their first time to meet Scott's girlfriend, Kristina.

In addition to the eight people, we had three dogs: Sydney (a collie), Toby (some type of hound), and Addie (a very large great Dane). It was chaos and I was a little overwhelmed by everything.

To start with, we had wine, cheese, and crackers. Our dinner tonight was shish kabobs that I grilled outside. I had a hard time grilling the shish kabobs for eight people with them having a mix of beef, chicken, tofu, and vegetables. They all don't take the same amount of time to cook.

Jen's mom brought over a really good dish. It was some sort of cheesy chunky potatoes. I loved it!
