first week in the new job

It’s been a full week in my new job. The week has been pretty rough.

For example, it took me until Friday to get my commute route finalized. I didn’t have a problem getting from my house to the Spring Street exit on I20, but after that things get a little confusing. All of the wacky one-way streets and conditional “no turns” or “no turns between 4pm & 6pm except for the day of the week which is a prime number” type signs really messed me up.

Thanks to Google maps and trial & error, I have my route set and finally today I had a flawless commute to & from home with no missed turns or getting lost. I think I finally got the hang of it.

Another good thing is that my commute is about five minutes shorter than it was to Delta. I was under the impression that it would be slightly longer, not shorter - so this was a pleasant surprise.

Things seem to be a lot more structured in this new job. This is both good and bad. It’s good because things are always moving ahead and we don’t deal with bad planning or constantly disappointing the customer. It’s bad in that I’m simply not used to it. I’m used to a much different approach to things. It’ll take some getting used to.

The other negative point I’ve been experiencing so far is that I’m starting as a nobody again and have to prove myself and establish a reputation. I think I had a pretty good reputation and as a result a decent amount of ‘clout’ at my previous job. I’m no longer a big fish and that’ll take some getting used to.

The main thing that I’m most worried about is that I don’t want to fail. I’m dealing with a completely different environment (from a development point-of-view) by doing web development with ASP.NET. While this is something I want to try (I’ve wanted to do .NET development since it was first in beta form back in 2000), I’m so much more at home in a command-line unix environment. The new tools and methodologies and concepts are going to take some getting used to.

Fortunately my manager knows my history and I think he’s willing to give me some time to ramp-up on this, so in that respect it’s a great opportunity.

I felt pretty uncertain about how I would do starting out. But now I’m feeling a little better. I hope next week goes better.

I just started my 1st week at my new job. Things went well. I have a lot to learn. My boss knows that I don’t have much experience in my field, so I’m glad he’s taken me on. The next week will be more hands on and I will actually be doing what my job description says. I am nervous and I don’t want to fail cause they seem like nice people there. Hopefully I can prove they made the right choice,
