heading up to the biltmore

I spent the morning working from home. Jen worked on packing up and getting ready for our trip. Jen was excited to use her new free bag from Victoria’s Secret. I tried to cram all of my clothes and multiple pairs of shoes into my cool pelican case.

A little after 1pm we hit the road. Jen started off driving and we finished listening to Ender’s Shadow. I had previously listened to it. Jen had two more CDs to listen to and I agreed to listen to them again. The audio book made the drive go by really quickly and overall the drive up to 85 was uneventful. Traffic was moderate allowing us to make good time.

When we hit South Carolina we were startled to see fallen trees, traffic lights out and storm weathered streets. The big ice storm a few days ago really did a number on SC.

After 3 hours of driving Jen was a bit exhausted, so she had the bright idea to pull off an exit that looked like it had a lot of places to stop at. She was secretly looking for a Starbucks - what a mistake this was. Traffic was horrible. The exit she selected was the equivalent to our Barret Parkway.

There was mall and traffic was horrible. We finally stopped at a grocery store. Jen bought two fancy Starbucks drinks and I grabbed an energy drink.

Next I took over driving and fought the traffic back on to the highway. We arrived in Asheville, North Carolina a little after 5pm and checked into our hotel, the Doubletree.

The cool thing about Doubletree is that they always give you fresh cookies when you check in. I love this amenity! The room was nice and we started to unpack and plan our evening events. I used my kool-rad laptop + cell phone (GPRS) internet access setup to check on tickets to the Biltmore. I bought tickets to the ‘Biltmore Candle Light Tour’ and made reservations for us to have dinner at the fancy restaurant on the Biltmore property called ‘The Dinning Room’.

‘The Dinning Room’ is located on the bottom floor of the Inn on the Biltmore Estate. Dinner was wonderful. For a fixed price you get a salad, main course, and dessert. We also got a bottle of the Biltmore Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. I was a bit confused about how a Biltmore wine could come from Napa. Our waiter enlightened us: apparently after a storm came through Asheville a few years ago and destroyed a huge portion of their vineyards, the Biltmore purchased a vineyard in Napa. They still make all of the wine at the Biltmore but a lot of the grapes are shipped in from Napa Valley. I wonder if all the shipping degrades the quality of the grapes?

As we ate our dinner we saw an interesting device on another table. After inquiring we discovered it was a ‘Belgium coffee service’. This science experiment-looking device apparently makes coffee without the use of a filter. There are two canisters with tubes connecting them. The first canister is heated by a sterno flame below it. As the water gets hot it moves through the tubes to the second canister. When the first canister is light enough the candle is extinguished as the other canister flips a lid closed. As the coffee cools in the seconds canister it moves back through into the first canister via the laws of thermodynamics. We of course had to get this fun coffee device at our table (which sadly cost $30).

After dinner we headed over to the Biltmore house (The tour was for 10:30pm). At night you park and take a shuttle bus over to the main entrance. The tour of the house is self guided and the place was packed full of people. We had a great time walking through the house and seeing the many decorations. The house is magnificent and serves as an excellent snapshot of history.

Once we concluded the tour I went back to the car and headed out. The long & winding drive takes you in front of the house. I stopped and prepared to take a photo of the house at night. With the camera securely fastened to the tripod, I took a 25-30 second exposure of the house. Actually I took multiple shots but ended up with one in particular that I was most happy with.

touring the Biltmore

Jen woke up before I did this morning. Another bonus with Doubletree hotels is that they serve Starbucks coffee in the lobby. Jen loved this fact. She headed downstairs and got herself coffee and hot chocolate for me. We snacked on some fresh fruit for breakfast and then headed back to the Biltmore.

We thought we would start they day off with a behind the scenes tour. We headed to the welcome center and purchased tickets for a behind the scenes tour at 1:15. We had few hours to kill so we headed back to the main house to explore the restaurants and shopping in the barn next to the house. The place was crazy with all the people. The wait to get into the house itself was over an hour. It made Jen and me very glad that we had gone through the main house the night before.

We walked all round the shops and picked up a cool three-dimensional gold Christmas ornament of the Biltmore house. We are going to make it an anniversary tradition to pick out a different Christmas ornament every anniversary.

Jen and I ate lunch in what use to be the main stables for the house. Our ‘booth’ was actually an old converted stall. The place looked incredible and it looked so fancy for being a place where horses were stabled. The food was decent. After lunch we explored a little of the outside of the house before our tour started.

The behind the scenes tour was extremely interesting. We got to see the gentleman’s wing, servant staircases, elevator, basement, old transformers (more than meets the eye), part of the roof, and various other bedrooms and bathrooms.

After the tour we walked around the grounds some more. There was a garden area that I’m sure looks great in the spring. I took some photos as we walked around. We headed out from the estate and drove over to the winery to take the tour and sample the wine.

The line for the winery was out the door. We debated about leaving but finally opted to stick it out. We started outside and then moved to a holding room inside. After waiting in the holding room inside we moved to small movie theater room. There we watched a 5 minute movie on the history of the Biltmore wine. The movie wasn’t very good. I guess to appeal to the masses they dumbed down the wine making process.

After the movie you head down to a self guided tour of the winery. This consists of two glass overlooks that allow you to see the red wine vats and the bottling of champagne. We opted to skip this and head directly to the tasting. After all, having the wine is the best part!

The tasting room is a huge room with circle bars setup all throughout the room. It actually reminded me of an assembly line at a factory. A hostess directs you to an empty seat where you are given a menu and the option to taste 3 recommended wines and 5 of your own choosing.

Jen and I had a great time trying different wines. However, the wines we were really interested in where only offered at the premium wine tasting that you have to pay for. After sampling the wines we entered the wine shop. Jen convinced me that we needed to try the premium wines. We had additional fun sampling the heavier bodied reds. After all the wonderful tastings we purchased several bottles and headed out for dinner.

We tried the restaurant near the winery but they required reservations and only had availability for 9 pm. We didn’t want to wait that long.

After driving around Asheville for a long time we finally opted for Don Pablos. It wasn’t the most exciting dinner but it we were starving so it worked out well. After dinner we headed back to the hotel room. We watched several episodes of “Lost” on my laptop which I brought for just this occasion.

one year wedding anniversary

Jen and I both slept in a late. After checking out of the hotel we opted to head back to Atlanta because we couldn’t find many exciting things to do in Asheville aside from the Biltmore Estate.

I drove and Jen worked on a scarf that she was knitting. Jen also popped in one of the audio books that she brought along, The Gunslinger by Steven King.

The book is interesting but the reader’s voice tends to put you to sleep. Jen convinced me that Commerce (a small town in Georgia) was a good place to stop and take a break. This also happens to be where a ton of outlet stores are. So we were able to do a quick run through the Banana Republic Factory Outlet there. They had a great Christmas Sales and we both bought a few things. Jen offered to drive the rest of the way and we headed home.

Because today is our actual anniversary we opted to cook dinner in and use the good china. We stopped at the grocery store on the way back.

Jen ran into the store to buy a few items while I waited in the car and made a few phone calls. I was shocked that we were going to actually use the china since it seems to be such a big deal.

For dinner we had salad, steak, and potatoes. For dessert we pulled out our year old wedding cake and had some. We were both pleasantly surprised to find it quite tasty after a whole year.

After dinner we concluded the first season of “Lost“. It’s a good show like everyone says it is. We were hoping that the conclusion would offer some answers but it pretty much just created new ones. That’s pretty frustrating.

christmas party

Yesterday Jen and I went to the store to go shopping for supplies ahead of today since we are having a Christmas party at our place.

Jen and I took a series of self portraits (using the tripod and timer on the camera) in front of our Christmas tree. We were hoping to get a decent picture to send out in Christmas Cards. Once we selected a photo to use, I did some work in photoshop to clean up our faces, whiten teeth, eyes, etc. Just doing the little I did made me appreciate how much models are transformed in the digital darkroom before being presented in magazines.

Tom, Terry, Katie, and Chris came over. We had cookies and snacks, and of course wine.

It’s a ‘white elephant‘ themed party in which people bring wrapped gifts and set them on the table. Next, people randomly draw numbers to see who gets to go in what order. The first person to go picks a present an unwraps it. The second person can either choose a new present or take another unwrapped present from someone else - in which case the person who had their present stolen can steal from someone else in turn or pick a new present. No matter what, a present can only be stolen once (or was it twice?), so there is a bit of strategy to get what you want.

I was pretty excited because I got what I wanted: a space heater. I want to keep it downstairs in the study to keep my feet warm in the winter.

Afterwards we played charades. It was a fun time.

lisa’s engagement party

Jen didn’t have to work today. I also took a ‘personal day’ so we had all day to do stuff. This, of course, meant that we went shopping!

We went up to Costco near Perimeter to buy some stuff and we stopped at ‘Rolly Poly’ for lunch afterwards.

This evening we went to an engagement party for Lisa and Allen. It was at one of Lisa’s uncles’ house. Lisa’s parents were there as well as many of her relatives. Jen and I were pretty much the only non-family people there when we arrived, so we didn’t know anyone.

A little while after we got there Katie and Chris showed up. Lynne showed up too. Last to arrive actually were Lisa and Alan. I guess they were being fashionably late.

They had food catered from a Mexican restaurant as well as a lot of other snacks and drinks.

Dec 24th 2005

christmas eve

Today Jen and I spent pretty much all day working on the downstairs study and storage room. We cleaned both rooms and did a massive re-arranging of the furniture.

The storage closet is much more organized now and easier to get around in. Jen was able to place things such that we can access them easier than before.

The study rearranging was something we had wanted to do for a while. It was a big pain in the ass to move the tri-leaning bookshelves as they are all one gigantic piece and its all solid wood.

To our surprise there were some stains left behind on the carpet from where the bookshelves used to sit. On the underside of some of the ‘feet’ are metal screws and they apparently left some sort of rust behind. Jen busted out the super cleaner and took care of it. We also applied tape to the underside of the feet so that it doesn’t mar the carpet in the new location.

Once this was all done we had everything organized and back in place. The study looks great now. It looks especially cozy with just the lamp on.

This evening we planned on having a Christmas Eve dinner at Katie’s house. Chris wasn’t able to attend because he was in Alabama visiting with some of his family.

Jen’s parents were there as well as Scott and his great dane Adi.

We had a really nice time having a good dinner that Katie made for us all. It was pretty laid back and we had a great time.

(Jen took this photo of me with Katie in the background)

For dinner we had a light salmon salad. Desert was definitely the highpoint of the meal. When Katie announced that we would be having ‘green tea cheesecake’ I didn’t know what to expect. However the cheesecake was incredibly good! We all liked it very much. To go along with the cheesecake we had a ‘teasin’ (or something like that) which is hot water with fresh raspberries dropped inside. It made for a tasty drink.

After dinner and desert Jen’s Dad had to take off, but the rest of us remained behind and played Skipbo. We played in teams - Katie was on my team. I don’t think I like playing in teams not because Katie isn’t any good, but I was focused 100% on winning the game and Katie was focused on talking and socializing with everyone. As a result we did not win both games.

christmas day

When Jen and I woke up this morning we went downstairs and had some coffee in our fine china. We then exchanged gifts with each other in the living room. It was a nice moment for the two of us as it was our first real Christmas together.

We had a pretty full schedule today so we didn’t wait around too long. I did notice, however, that it was really foggy outside this morning. Particularly around bodies of water there was a thick fog. I used my camera to take a picture outside the front door of the lake in our neighborhood.

When I went back to look at the picture later on, it almost has an impressionism feel to it - I suspect the fog everywhere gives it that look.

We got dressed and headed up to Woodstock to spend Christmas Day with Jen’s parent’s. In addition to her parents, Katie, Scott, Jen’s grandmother, and Jen’s Dads sister were there.

We had fun snacks to eat in the morning including some good coffee cake. Jen’s parents made me a stocking and there were some cool things inside like a voltmeter, pocket knife, toy gun, screwdriver, etc.

Jen’s aunt gave me a cool LED flashlight that works on an induction charge by shaking it a lot. I later found out that you have to shake it a whole lot to get just a little light.

We had a very nice time at Jen’s parent’s house. We all exchanged presents and then had a late lunch.

Later, Jen and I headed to Mom’s house where we had dinner with them.
