So this morning I decided to go into work late in order to vote without waiting in line too long. I paged Carole to make sure that was ok.
At 9:30am I drove over to my polling station (near my old apartment). I was expecting to be in and out real quick. After all, everyone is at work by 9:30am. A policeman was out front waving people off because there was no parking. I looked at the parking lot and to my horror I saw a super long line snaking out of the building and all over the parking lot. It looked like at least a couple of hours to wait. I was already late for work as it was so I passed and decided to go vote later.
On my way into work Alex paged me about a shared library problem. When I made it into work, he figured it out.
I went through the stacks of papers on my desk in an attempt to get organized. I also researched a question from Anne about Exchange Valuation.
James and I went to McDonalds for lunch today. We picked up food and brought it back to the office to eat in the break room with Brian, Alex, Susan, Kindle, and Javier.
A little while after lunch I went with Sameer and Veena to a meeting across the street to go over the ticket replay project. It was a pretty productive meeting and we got a lot accomplished.
After the meeting I headed out and made a second attempt to vote. Traffic was light as I drove up to my polling station near my old apartment. This time the line was much shorter.
Even though it was 2:30pm, it still took me fifty minutes to vote. I also filled out a change of address form for my new address. The voting machine was a computer with a touch screen. I was a bit disappointed that there was no paper ballot to confirm what I voted, but at least I wasn’t disenfranchised.
After that I went home and logged back into work. I also called Travis to let him know that I’m home in case anyone can come by this evening to finish some of the work in my construction-site of a dining-room.
Larry called to let me know that he voted. His polling station was literally inside a barn and when he went to vote, there was no one else around (no wait) but six empty polling booths. Everything seems better in California.
I worked on my journal and had the television glued to the news while they droned on about the election. I sure hope it’s something like last year where we don’t know for several days/weeks who won. That was really exciting and fun.
The doorbell rang and some workers came over to do the trim work in the dining room. They didn’t speak much English so it was difficult to communicate with them. I left them to their work.
While they were working I noticed one worker using a nail gun to fasten a wood piece of trim to the wall in the area near the foyer. This was the area where a trim nail punctured a water pipe and caused one of the water leaks. I ran over to her and tried to communicate with her that she can’t nail in a certain area. She laughed, removed the piece, and then walked away. I wasn’t sure what to do next because I couldn’t communicate with her.
Fortunately a little while later, another worker showed up who knows English. I explained the situation and he seemed to understand so he nailed the trim on gingerly and only in the corners.
A little while later they were done and left. I looked over the work but wasn’t too happy with how some of it looked. Maybe it will look better when it is painted.
A storm blew through this evening. I didn’t lose power but the DirecTV reception cut out for quite a while. I’ve never had a problem with reception in bad weather before - even during the hurricane.
In addition, my internet connectivity went offline. As expected, my router began several attempts to re-connect:
Nov 2 21:44:56 buffalo-downstairs pppd[83]: Sending PADT

Nov 2 21:45:33 buffalo-downstairs pppd[83]: Couldn’t get channel number: Transport endpoint is not connected
… Then it finally gave up trying about five minutes later. This annoyed me that it just gave up. I then logged into the router and told it to try connecting again. This time it tried a little longer but I noticed that the socket was all 0’s this time:

I tested the phone line and saw that there was a dial-tone. So I went downstairs and cycled the power on the DSL modem. As soon as I did that, the router connected and authenticated with no problem.
What I don’t understand is why the DSL modem needed to be turned off and on again in order to get a clean connection. It’s connected to a UPS (along with the router) so it should not have been affected by power fluctuations.
I’m looking for reliability and automated recovery and tonight it failed in that department when I had to manually intervene.
