the hooding ceremony

As what seems to be the case with all Sunday’s, we had a much slower start to the day than yesterday. Jen did some laundry while we had cinnamon rolls and read the newspaper. We also watched some shows on TLC.

I worked on Jen’s computer to get XP installed (finally). Before beginning the installation, I backed up all of her data on the external HD.

However, I left the USB 2.0 interface drive connected to the computer during the installation of XP via the bootable install CD. Knowing that I had a backup, I erased the partitions of her old HD.

However, as soon as I erased the ’second partition’ of her HD did I realize that it was the external HD partition that I erased! I had no idea that the XP install was smart enough to detect and identify a USB 2.0 external HD. I was both impressed and upset because I blew away her partition.

I told Jen that I would try to recover the HD but have tools for it at my place. Even with the backup temporarily gone, I continued with the installation of XP. It went smoothly but I ran out of time during the installation of patches and security updates. It was time for Jen and I to go to her hooding ceremony.

Once on campus I met up with Kyle and Kristen’s family. Jen and Kristen went off to the assembly area so I stuck around with Kyle and the others.

The ceremony lasted a couple of hours and was really nice. I was pretty far away from the stage but with my 28-135mm lens zoomed to 135mm I was able to get some decent shots of the activities on the stage. The problem was with the lighting conditions though. The distance was much too far for the onboard flash as all I got was a black screen when taking photos of the stage with the flash and ISO 400. Sure enough I saw other around me bewildered that none of their shots were turning out.

I decided to up the ISO to 3200 and take my chances with available light. It was really tough because the scenes were metering down to 1/30s and 1/20s but thankful the image stabilization feature of my lens helped out.

Nonetheless, the photos I managed to take weren’t that great. The ISO 3200 yielded a ton of noise, the lens is pretty bad wide-open, and the slow shutter speeds cause blur from the slightest movements of the subjects. At least it was better than nothing which I fear is what most other people in the stands ended up with using their onboard flashes.

After the ceremony I met up with Jen and we went outside to the campus green for cookies and punch. We found Jen’s parents as well as her brother and sister. I got some photos of Jen and Kristen and Kyle got some photos of me and Jen.

(me and Jen)

We were supposed to meet at Jen’s parent’s house afterwards but first we stopped off at Jen’s house briefly and then went to her grandmother’s apartment to pick her up.

By now I’ve met almost all of Jen’s family but today I met her grandmother for the first time. She seemed like a nice woman and her little apartment was very cozy.

From there we went to Jen’s parent’s house for dinner. The food was great and the company was good too. I spent a great deal of time talking with her father. Jen’s cousin, Madeline, was also there. We’re going to her wedding over Labor day in Minneapolis. They had birthday and graduation presents for Jen. For desert we had great sponge cake with raspberry sherbet inside. It was pretty good; I can’t wait to have it again!

After the dinner celebration we went back to Jen’s house to pack up some things and then went down to my house. We’ve been doing a lot of driving this weekend.

I ended up staying up late working on things for deployment as well as a very lengthy email detailing the production problem yesterday.

Aug 2nd 2004

the graduation ceremony

I woke up at 7am and immediately began doing work stuff. I’m supposed to have the day off today but we have a production load that I need to assist with. I sent off the request to sustaining engineering for a deployment and got everything ready to activate the code in production.

Finally they got they got the code deployed and I worked frantically and efficiently to get everything activated in time. I used my cordless phone to join the bridge call but discovered that as soon as I turned on the phone, I dropped my WiFi connection. I know that 802.11b/g use the same 2.4GHz frequency as my cordless phone, but I thought I was on a non-interfering channel. I even tried to change the channel of my cordless phone several times to no avail. This really frustrated me and I had to switch to the cell phone.

Once those problems were resolved I finished the work. Jen left for her place around this time. The plan was to meet her at KSU after the graduation ceremony.

Jegan came back to work today after being away for a month in India. I passed some things off to him and left the bridge call. Everything appeared to be pretty smooth at this time.

I got ready for the graduation ceremony and called up Jen’s parents to see about meeting to sit together during the ceremony.

I drove up to KSU and found Jen’s parents at the very back of the hall close to the door. The location didn’t provide much of a view.

The ceremony was long but at least I got to see Jen walk across the stage. Once the ceremony concluded Jen’s parents and I were the first ones out given that we sat so close to the exit. We met up with Jen outside eventually and Jen introduced me to her friend Ellen. I took some pictures of Jen, Ellen, and Kristen. I also met Ellen’s Mom who works for Delta Technology in the same building I do. She works down on the third floor in the CAPS group.

(photo of Jen & friends)

Shortly after that we left campus and headed over to a sports bar near Town Center mall with Jen’s parents. Jen and I had a drink but didn’t stay too long. We had dinner plans tonight in celebration of Jen’s graduation and birthday.

We moved Jen’s car to another parking lot and drove in my car down to Vinings. We were a bit early for our dinner appointment so we drove around the Vinings area to look at the huge houses. Eventually we made our way over to Canoe for dinner.

Our reservations at Canoe were for 7pm but we got there about thirty minutes early. We were seated right away near the windows which was nice. We each had an appetizer. We also ordered a bottle of wine. Previously I checked with Larry to recommend a good wine from their wine list online. Unfortunately their online wine list is a couple of years outdated so all of the wines Larry recommended were not available. Instead we took a guess and ordered the ‘Conn Creek‘ Cabernet Franc red wine from Napa Valley. It was pretty good.

Dinner was pretty nice and we had a great time eating and making merry. Jen had the Alaskan Halibut and I had the Lamb. We talked a lot about our relationship.

After dinner we drove over to my house so I could get some clothes and supplies for tomorrow and then we drove up to Jen’s house to spend the night.

sad news

Work was a pretty usual Wednesday. I made plans on spending the evening with Jen so after work I rushed home. I was only there for about 1.5 hours and in that time I managed to get a lot done.

I took several photos of the new bed, I cleaned up the kitchen and living-room, I watered the plans, emptied the dishwasher, and got some things together for Jen’s house.

While I was doing all of this I called back Craig because I noticed that he left me a message yesterday. Craig bore some very sad news. Our mutual friend Alex was murdered this past Sunday. Alex was dating a girl that he met online. This girl had an ex-boyfriend who, one evening, shot & killed Alex when Alex and his girlfriend returned home from a date. The ex-boyfriend then killed himself.

Alex was a very intelligent guy with a bright future and it was awfully sad to learn of his death. He and Craig were very close and I suspect this hit Craig pretty hard. When Craig told me, it was hard to believe that Alex was really gone.

I left my place and headed towards Jen’s house. On the way I stopped at Willy’s to pick up some burritos for dinner. When I arrived at Jen’s house, Lisa was there. They had been talking and drinking and having a good time. Shortly after I arrived, Lisa left.

Jen and I had dinner together and were very happy to see each other. I really missed Jen and it was nice to spend the evening with her.

Jen’s party

Today was Friday and I was happy to have the week almost over. We made plans to have a special lunch at Smokey Bones. Lunch was wonderful as I had the full rack of baby-back ribs.

I put in a lot of time this past week so I planned on leaving work early today. Unfortunately it didn’t work out that way and I ended up working until 6:30pm. I planned on getting to Jen’s house early to help out with the party preparations but instead I didn’t get there until about 7:30pm.

Tom was already there when I arrived. I helped blow up balloons and get some things ready for the party. Katie arrived after a bit and brought some of the decorations.

Eventually people started to trickle in. Most of the early-arrivers were friends of Katie’s and people that Jen and I didn’t know. Finally more people arrived including Jen’s parents.

I spent some time outside with Jen’s brother, Scott; her Dad, and others. While I was outside, Jen stuck her head out of the door to let me know that my Mom and Jim arrived.

I went inside to greet them and introduce them to Jen’s parents as well as her brother and sister. They didn’t stay too long but I was very happy they came.

The party continued on into the night and many people left. We didn’t think Ellen and her husband Ethan would show up but eventually they did. Ethan was a pretty cool guy. He works in IT for IBM and has the same kind of phone I do. The first thing he did was show me that his memory-card was larger than mine (I have the factory 16MB card while he has the 256MB card).

I also talked with Damon quite a bit about Doom. Apparently Damon ‘works from home’ and was able to play Doom 3 all the way through this past week. Sometimes I wish my job was that laid back.

Around 1 or 2am the party was over and everyone went home. Jen and I were pretty tired and went to bed.

vacation-like saturday

Jen and I woke up this morning at a decent hour and went down to the Chick-Fil-A for breakfast with Lynne. We ended up getting the breakfast buffet which wasn’t that bad.

It was a beautiful ‘fall-like’ summer day today in the Atlanta metro area. This morning was cool and clear and sunny. Jen and I made plans to go to Athens for the day but decided at the last-minute not to go. Instead we decided to stay in town and relax.

A little while after breakfast we both got changed and went down to the neighborhood tennis courts. We played tennis, the first time together, for about thirty-minutes to an hour. It was great fun and we both played horribly but at least we were evenly matched. I’m really looking forward to playing with her again.

We went back to Jen’s house to take a shower and get changed. Our next fun activity of the day was to go to a nearby coffee shop to sit outside and read. Before we left I used my fun new 100mm USM Macro lens to photograph a large spider on Jen’s front porch:

(photo of spider)

I ended up spending about twenty minutes with my tripod experimenting with different apertures to get a couple of decent shots of the spider. I wonder if I need an extension tube?

We left Jen’s house and drove down to a nearby Caribou Coffee. Jen got some fancy-pants coffee drink and I got an iced tea. We sat outside under an umbrella and read our books. It was so nice outside we had a great time. It also felt so wonderful to get back into my book. I made a large dent in it and am really getting into it. Jen was reading ‘The Da Vinci Code‘ by Dan Brown and was also tearing through that book.

Originally we planned to see Spider Man 2 at the 2pm showing but decided instead to see the 7pm showing and get a late lunch right now. We went over to the Mexican restaurant for food, drink, and a good time.

Once there we immediately sat down outside and ordered a pitcher of margaritas. We also had the bean & cheese dip as well as some sort of tasty spicy chicken soup that I’ve never had before. It was very good. We had a really great time sitting in the late afternoon talking and drinking and eating outside.

What made this so wonderful was the ‘island-time’ like pace of everything. There was no rush, no schedule, no worries. We really had a great time just enjoying life together and that made it very special.

Around 6:30pm or so we headed over to the movie theatre and saw Spider Man 2. I had high expectations for this movie given what everyone was saying about it. The movie turned out to be a bit disappointing and slow.

After the movie Jen had to use the restroom really badly and it was so funny to see her running out of the theater waving her arms in the air as she sought a bathroom.

The last thing we did this evening was head over to Ellen & Ethan’s house for their party. Ellen was also having a graduation party and we were invited. They didn’t live too far away from Jen’s house so we found it pretty quickly.

The party was already past its zenith so we felt a bit out of place. In addition we didn’t really know anyone there except for Ethan and Ellen who were entertaining others. They had a very nice house with lots of cool stuff. Ethan gave us a tour. They had a lot of fancy things.

Jen and I didn’t stay too long and left their party after only being there about thirty minutes. After we left Jen pointed out that she had a strange feeling about the party - sort of like she didn’t feel good about herself. I felt the same way.

We went down to my house and went to bed.

Aug 8th 2004

damned mojitos

We woke up late this morning, as is typical of a Sunday. Jen and I each had a bowl of cereal. It was a great day outside - much like yesterday.

After we had breakfast, we decided to go outside and walk around the townhomes still under construction. For some time now we’ve wanted to see how the fireplace looks before drywall is put up.

We walked around some of the different townhomes in various stages of construction. We saw a couple with all the drywall up but still being worked on. We went through some that had everything but the drywall up, and then some with just the framing done. It was really fun to see my floor plan in all different stages of construction.

I used my cell phone to snap some crude photos of the construction. Jen and I had a great time doing this. We went back to my place and we took a shower. Afterwards we sat outside on the deck and read our books. It was sunny and nice outside today.

Eventually we packed things up and left. We went to Target and got some things for tonight. We also got some supplies for making Mojitos. Finally we made it over to Jen’s house and had some fun drinks with Lynne using Jen’s new martini set.

Around 6:30pm we all went over to Lisa’s house. Shortly after we got there, Jen and I set out to make some Mojitos. The only problem was that Jen and I had different ideas about how to make them. I had a singular idea in my head from a televised demonstration I saw. Jen wanted to be more free and whimsical about it. I didn’t catch onto this and suggested that we follow the directions. After a few times of this, she gave up and was visibly upset.

After that, the rest of the evening wasn’t so fun.

Aug 9th 2004

working late

This morning I left Jen’s house fairly early. For most schools in Atlanta, today is the first day of school. As a result, I was apprehensive about bad traffic into work. Fortunately it wasn’t that bad.

I wanted to talk to Carole today but she was out of the office. Work was pretty busy and I worked late today - not leaving until 7pm.

I went home and actually continued working. I was in a pretty good groove and working on something that I wanted to finish. I lost track of time and didn’t finish working until 3:30am. At least I got a lot done. I’m working on a new branching strategy for ClearCase.

Also during this time I installed Money 2005 as well as the ‘final’ version of SP2.

Aug 10th 2004

‘too late’

I woke up today at 8am but was still very tired. This wasn’t surprising given that I was up so late last night.

The alarm-system-installer guy showed up at 8:30am. While he was working on the system, he propositioned me to use him for service instead of the company he works for. I guess it’s pretty competitive.

He left around 9am. I stayed at home to work from home today (I already cleared it with Carole). I had some email conversations with Bob and Alex and left around noon for lunch with Jen.

I picked Jen up at her office and we went to Canton Cooks for lunch. This is one of her favorite places. We had the Thai hot & Sour soup as well as pan-seared snowpeas. It was pretty good. Jen and I had a great lunch together and it felt nice to see her during the day.

On the drive back home I got a page to join a production bridge call. Back home I worked more on ClearCase stuff, listened to music, and worked a little on my journal.

The afternoon started to slip away and I got a call from Jen. It turns out that she was upset that I didn’t specifically invite her over to my place this afternoon. I tried to make it right by inviting her during the phone conversation, but she explained that it was now ‘too late’ for that. She was upset and the call didn’t end well.

I packed up some things, left my house, and went over to Publix. There I got some food for dinner and some flowers for Jen. I drove over to Jen’s house and surprised her with the flowers.

She seemed happy that I came over and things were much better. Shortly after I arrived, I got a page from the TCC so I had to log into work and work on a production problem.

We ate dinner and watched ‘Nip Tuck‘ together. After the show, we got ready for bed and talked about the problems of the day. It did well to talk things through.

Aug 11th 2004

dinner, wine, bath

I actually got up early today at 5:30am and left Jen’s house at 6:15am. I wasn’t messing around today! I got into work at 7am.

A little while later I left to attend the all-hands meeting over at the large convention center off Camp Creek parkway. It was very cold inside - even though I was wearing a long-sleeved shirt.

The all-hands meeting was very long but didn’t really contain any meaningful information. They basically told us that Delta is in very bad financial state and the usual doom & gloom we’ve been hearing for the past two years. All of the problems are things completely out of my control, so all the information did nothing other than make me feel depressed.

The meeting concluded around noon and several of us went to lunch at Captain D’s. I have to say that their food is disgusting.

Earlier Bob T. asked me if I could take a portrait of his team to give a photo to their departing Mac-loving intern. I brought in my camera and set up in 11 South to take the group portrait. With the camera securely attached to the tripod, I snapped off several photos using the 28-135mm lens. I stopped down to about f/8 to hopefully hit the sweet spot aperture on the lens. They were positioned in a way that I wouldn’t benefit from a shallow DOF anyway.

Back at my desk, I quickly processed the photos and came up with the best one. I planned on getting an 8×12 print either today or tomorrow since the intern’s last day is Friday.

After attending the PAT meeting this afternoon I left work around 5pm. On m way home I stopped at the Camp Creek Wolf Camera and got an 8×12 print made of the portrait. It was more expensive than I thought - around $15.

Jen came over straight from work a little while after I got home. We headed to the grocery store for supplies for dinner. We planned on making something new and exciting for dinner today. Jen did all the research and found some fun new recipes.

We had a great time making dinner together. This seems to always be the case whenever we make fun new things. We started out with some bread-like stuff which was pretty good. It was sliced French bread boiled to toast in the oven, garlic slices rubbed all over it and then spread with a tomato type sauce. It was very good.

While doing this we popped open a bottle of wine and drank liberally.

Next, we made a spiced potato wedges dish as well as lemon pepper zest chicken which I grilled along with corn on the cob. The potatoes were great but we weren’t too excited about the chicken.

After dinner we cleaned up and opened another bottle of wine after finishing off the first bottle. We went upstairs, lit some candles, and took a relaxing bath together. It was very nice indeed.

Afterwards we went back downstairs to watch some television and relax on the sofa. We had more wine. Jen fell asleep. All of this wine didn’t make me feel very good and I lost my wits. After a while I woke Jen up and we went to bed.

Aug 12th 2004

stuffed

Today was a fairly slow day at work, and I had a horrible hangover from all the wine the previous night.

One of the first things I did today was give Bob T. the printed photo so they could all sign it for Nate. He reimbursed me for the printing cost.

I worked on a bugfix for the current system test code as well as a production bugfix. I had to do some fancy things in ClearCase to allow developers to work on the production bugfix as well as the current code for the next release. This exercise gave me pause to rethink the current branching strategy and I plan on putting something in place to make things easier to work with.

Around 4pm I had to leave a PAT meeting and go to the dentist. It was a particular good PAT meeting too. They were discussing a conceptual architecture about a new interface with Orbitz to lower ticket costs. I was sad to leave.

At the dentist office, I had my second and last cavity filled. It took about an hour. Half of my face felt so strange from the Novocain injections they gave me. It was especially strange when I developed an ‘itch’ on my chin in an area where I still had no feeling. I scratched at the ‘itch’ but it never went away. In fact it didn’t even feel like I was scratching my own skin because I couldn’t feel it.

From there I went straight to Jen’s house. I got there before her, but she showed up a little after I did. Around 6:30pm we left for Mom’s house. Once there we saw the new deck outside and visited with her and Jim for a while.

After about thirty minutes we left for Stoney River. There was only about a fifteen minute wait. While we waited, I received a phone call from Craig. I took the call and went outside where it was quieter. We made plans for him to come to Atlanta next weekend with his girlfriend.

Dinner at Stoney River was as it always is: stellar. Everything was wonderful. I had a chocolate martini with my ribeye steak. Jen liked it too but commented that the food was pretty heavy with cream and butter.

During dinner we talked with Mom and Jim and generally had a good time. I ate a lot. So much, in fact, that I felt uncomfortable. Jen gave me some tums and I felt a little better.

When we got back to Jen’s house I logged into work and did about an hours worth of work to kick off a build and deploy the other build. I sent off an email and went to bed.

Aug 13th 2004

dinner party and bags

I woke up early and logged into work to check on the build. It made me very sad to see that it failed with a compile error. I did some investigation and identified the problem with the changed code that Anil checked in. Due to the wacky way we have to make production breakfixes separate from the next release, we picked up some more changes than we originally wanted. This caused the compile to fail.

I composed a lengthy and detailed email describing the problem and sent it off to Anil and Casey. After that I got ready for work and headed in.

Carole was out sick today. I scrambled to find a more solid solution to the production breakfix problem.

While working on this, I had to go to a meeting to talk about the backloading performance issues. Because I had a lot on my mind, I spent most of the meeting working on a branching solution to breakfixes. Actually, I did both. I was feeling rather sharp today and managed to actively participate in the meeting and work on the other thing at the same time. I wish I could always be so ’sharp’. Our new portfolio architect, Gus, was also present in the meeting.

After the meeting I talked with Casey and Anil about a new time-based rule to allow for production breakfixes. This new bugfix branch should work well until I can implement the new /main branch solution.

I build code from the new bugfix branch and then went to lunch with Casey. We went to Best Buy so Casey could buy a new TiVo and I could buy a wireless router for Larry. Afterwards we went to Steak and Shake for lunch. I had the ‘All-American Melt’. It was very tasty.

After lunch I worked on activating the build and left work around 4pm. Before heading home I stopped by the employee ticket office to buy a ticket for Jen.

When I got home I called Travis to see about the warranty walkthrough. He said that he would be over in an hour. Two hours later he called to say that he won’t be able to come by today.

As I do every day, I logged into work via the eVPN client. Today I noticed some strange behavior. I could access work with no problem, but could no longer see anything else inside my local LAN. Furthermore, I noticed that some websites were now blocked by Delta. This didn’t used to be an issue because only Delta-bound traffic went through Delta and everything else went through my ISP. It now appears that everything is going to Delta.

I did a lot of research and quickly honed in on the problem. They recently changed the behavior of the VPN such that split-tunneling is disabled. With split tunneling enabled, only traffic bound for the VPN network went through the VPN and everything else went through the original gateway (my ISP). However, with split tunneling disabled, ALL traffic goes through Delta which sucks. This means that I can no longer see my local network (including my printer).

This change really sucks and there isn’t anything I can do about it because it’s a rule sent down from the VPN switch on the remote side. This means I won’t be logged into work as much anymore because it’s not very convenient.

Jen came over after work and we went to Publix to get some things to make Key Lime pie. We went back to my place and quickly made the pie. While it was baking, we dressed for the party and eventually headed out to Christin’s dinner party.

When we arrived at Christin’s house, in addition to Christen and Kyle, John and Cassie were there too. Cassie works for the Delta Employees Credit Union.

Dinner was great. It was a very nice night outside tonight as it was clear and cool given the time of year. We had grilled chicken and veggies as well as margaritas. Christin’s two dogs, Henry and Rocky were really cool.

Jen and I had a nice time at the dinner party but left around 11pm. We didn’t want to stay up too late given our flight tomorrow morning. I was also pretty tired too.

We went back to my place and worked on the bags that Jen got. After work today Jen stopped at Michaels to pickup some fun things. She got me some candle holders and candles for me, but she also had a wonderful idea. Jen got some small denim bags, goodies to put inside, paint to mark them, and custom keychains.

Jen and I (Jen mostly) decorated the bags. We painted Tucker, Lily, and Cal on each of the three bags. Next, we printed out the phrase, ‘I love my uncle bags’ for each keychain. Jen had the brilliant idea that ‘Uncle Bags’ (me) would bring his bags for the three kids. I loved it and looked forward to giving them the bags of goodies tomorrow.

Shortly after that we went to bed.

Aug 14th 2004

don’t check anything remotely valuable

The alarm woke us up today at 5:30am. We efficiently showered, dressed, and packed for our trip to San Diego. We left the house by 6:50am.

We made it to the airport and checked in with no problem. When we made it to the gate, I saw that we were already given seat assignments. To my great surprise I saw that we were both in first class! However, we were not seated next to each other. I was in 4A and Jen was in 1D. I’m not sure why we weren’t seated next to each other given that we were on the same itinerary.

The flight was great. Breakfast was good. I worked on my laptop and read a lot of my book. We landed in San Diego with no problem but it did take a while to get our bag.

Larry and Amy picked us up from the airport. They came in Amy’s new blue Mercedes. We drove over to Little Italy for lunch (to an Italian place of course). I had the beef lasagna which was quite good.

From there we went to a hotel near Torey Pines to retrieve Larry’s car. I drove back to the house with Larry while Jen drove with Jen.

Larry and I arrived at the house first. Larry gave me a short tour of their new place. I met Tucker, Lily, Cal, and Jenny the baby-sitter. After Jen and Amy arrived, Larry and I moved Tucker’s bed out of Tucker’s room and into Lily’s room. Jen and I had Tucker’s room to sleep in on an air mattress while Tucker would stay in Lily’s room for the duration of our stay.

While we were changing out of our airplane clothes into swimsuits, I immediately noticed that my checked bag was missing an item I packed there this morning. The newly-bought Linksys WRTG54 router I bought for Larry as a housewarming gift was stolen out of my checked luggage. This really made me mad. Fortunately I purchased it with my new American Express card. One of the reasons I got that card was the ‘purchase protection’ program. I’ll look into exercising that when I get back.

Larry, Jen, Tucker, Lily, and I went to a nearby beach. It was overcast but pretty nice. The water was too cold to go swimming. I used Larry’s awesome Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS lens to take pictures.

(Jen and Lily in this photo taken from the incredible 70-200)

(Larry and Tucker having a snack)

We stayed at the beach for a couple of hours. On the way back home we stopped at an office supply store so I could purchase Larry a replacement router.

While we were away at the beach, Amy got food ready for dinner. She did a great job and we had a nice all-American dinner consisting of hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage, potato salad, coleslaw, and baked beans. We also had some veggie burgers for Jen.

We grilled it all up and ate outside in the beautiful back yard. It was a wonderful sunny afternoon and we thoroughly enjoyed our time outside. We had some wine and the kids played in the yard.

Eventually when we made it back inside, I worked on the new router and got it all set up correctly. Jen and I were pretty tired and went to bed.

Aug 15th 2004

hiking torey pines

Due to us being used to Eastern Time, Jen and I were wide awake by 6am. Jen brewed some coffee and the two of us sat in the living-room and read our books together. It was nice and relaxing and I realized that I really enjoy sitting and reading with Jen.

(Larry watching television with the three kids)

A while after the others woke up we got things together and all headed out to breakfast. We went to a nearby restaurant called ‘Miltons‘. Jen and I weren’t too hungry so we split an order of french toast made from a Jewish Callah bread. It was a lot of food and I enjoyed the thick bacon too.

After breakfast, Amy took Cal back home. Larry, Tucker, Lily, Jen, and I headed over to Torrey Pines to go hiking. Despite the kids being with us, we went on a lengthy trail and had a great time.

(Torrey Pines)

The weather was nice, we got lots of sunshine, and we hiked all the way down to the beach. Along the way I took lots of pictures. I only brought two lenses with me: the 15mm fisheye, and the 50mm prime.

(Me and Jen)

Once we got down to the beach we took our time to walk along back to the entrance of the park. Larry volunteered to hike back up to the car and bring it back down to the entrance.

(The Torrey Pines beach)

Jen and I remained behind to watch after Tucker and Lily. We had lot of fun playing with them on the beach. They were very well behaved.

(Jen playing with Tucker)

Once Larry returned with the car, we packed up and left. We went back to the house. Jen and I ate some lunch and were feeling pretty tired.

As the afternoon grew on we took a shower and got ready for dinner tonight. One of the babysitters, Sarah, came over to look after the kids. Larry, Amy, Jen, and I headed out for dinner.

On the way we stopped at a furniture store called ‘Indigo’. It was a pretty fancy looking place with (in my mind) high prices. Larry and Amy bought some shells and a large mirror. Unfortunately the mirror would not fit in Amy’s car so we had to leave it behind to be picked up a later day.

Next we went on to dinner to an Italian place. It was very cozy inside. We opened up a bottle of wine we brought (A merlot called ‘Switchback Ridge‘). The wine was excellent and the dinner was wonderful. It was fun to hang out with Larry and Amy as they are great hosts. We ended up getting another bottle of wine, talked a lot, and had a great time.

After dinner we stopped at a beach to watch the sunset. It was so much fun sitting on the beach watching the sun dip below the Pacific Ocean.

When we got back to the house we learned that Tucker had hit Lily on the head with a toy train and as a result, Lily had a cut. Sarah left and they put the kids to bed.

Jen and I attempted to program Amy’s new car to use the garage door opener, but could not make it work. The four of us watched some of the Ellen Degeneres special that Amy TiVoed but I was really tired so Jen and I went to bed early.

leaving sunny san diego

We woke up and Jen made some coffee. I checked my work email and saw that Casey did a build. Because the configspec was still set for breakfix fashion, I called Casey to warn him about the build. I also forwarded an email to Jegan from Jeff C. about some current production performance issues. I also checked the status of our flight and everything looked great.

Jen and I had an enjoyable shower and got some things packed up for our return trip. We played with Tucker and Lily this morning. They were still carrying around their cute little bags we gave them on Saturday. I read a Dr. Seuss book to Lily. I found out later that Jen secretly recorded me doing this with her camera in movie mode.

Larry and I moved Tucker’s bed back. We packed up the car and said goodbye to Amy and Cal and then left with Tucker and Lily in Larry’s car. It struck me that Amy didn’t go out with us much this entire trip. I think things are still sort of chaotic at the house that her attention is needed there as well as for Cal.

Larry drove us to the downtown area. We got stuck at a railroad crossing as a circus train moved through town. Once we cleared that we parked in front of a large air craft carrier museum. It was the USS Midway. Larry bought a family membership and we all boarded the ship.

For the next 1.5 hours we took a self-guided tour of the massive carrier. I’ve never been on one before so it was a real treat. It’s amazing how large it is. They had several planes on the flight deck. I took lots of pictures and had a great time.

(Deck of the U.S.S. Midway)

Afterwards we drove down to seaside village for lunch. Jen had fish tacos and I had a breakfast burrito. Lunch was pretty good and it was so nice outside. Once we finished lunch we walked along the sea wall area. Larry had Tucker on his shoulders and I had Lily on mine. Jen photographed the fun moment.

From there we drove over to Coronado Island to the Hotel Del Coronado. It’s really cool inside the hotel. Everything is made out of rich dark wood (even the ceiling) and it has an elegant old hotel feel to it. We walked through the hotel and outside the back down the beach. This particular beach was large and inviting. We didn’t stay long but I managed to take some pictures with my fisheye lens.

(Jen thinks the fisheye lens makes her breasts look large)

We headed back to the car and Larry drove us over to the airport. We said our goodbyes and headed inside. Jen and I took turns going into the restrooms to change out of our comfortable clothes into airplane clothes.

With that done we checked in for our flight and had to wait a bit for a seat assignment. The wait was well worth it because we got first class seated next to each other (4C and 4D). What a treat!

This made the four-hour return flight very enjoyable. For dinner on the flight we had chicken and watched the movie, ‘13 going on 30‘. It was pretty good. I read my book (almost done!) and worked on my journal. I’m very pleased with the battery life in my laptop.

(Jen snapped this photo out of the window during our flight)

The flight was very fun especially with Jen sitting next to me. We got into Atlanta around 10:22pm. Because we didn’t have much carryon baggage we decided to walk back to the baggage claim area instead of taking the train. We got our bag, caught the shuttle bus, and drove to my house.

Jen packed up some of her things and headed up to her house. I uploaded some journal entries and went to bed.

worthless purchase protection plan

I filled out a missing item form for Delta to report the stolen router from my bag. Unfortunately they don’t cover any electronic items. The long list of items they don’t cover is basically anything of value.

When I called American Express to exercise my ‘Purchase Protection‘ benefit, they happily informed me that it doesn’t cover checked baggage. They then had the nerve to try to sell me some $10/month coverage which DOES cover baggage (but only if you buy the plane ticket with the card). What a waste.

best friend visitation

This morning I left Jen’s house early and drove down to the airport to pick up Craig and his girlfriend Erin. I picked them up and drove back to my place.

The three of us relaxed at my place. Erin looked through my old high school yearbook (she went to Taft but was a year behind Craig and I). I showed Craig some of the cool Xbox hacks as well as the video game emulators.

As the morning faded to afternoon we got hungry so I called Jen to see about meeting us over at Houston’s. Jen met us there a few minutes after we arrived. We were seated in a boot at the back of the restaurant.

I had the veggie burger with bacon added. It was so delicious I can hardly put it to words. The burger itself was made out of some compacted rice with a sweet relish-like sauce. That in conjunction with the bacon resulted in the best burger I’ve ever had. It was a real treat.

During lunch we agreed to go see a movie. We briefly went back to my place to change into something appropriate for the cold theater and went to go see Alien Vs. Predator. It was about how I expected.

After the movie Jen had to go back to her house as she planned on spending some time with her Mom. Craig, Erin, and I went back to my place. On the way we stopped at a liquor store to get some supplies for fun drinks this afternoon. We got stuff to make margaritas (good Tequila, triplesec, margarita mix, and some other concoction that Craig assured me was necessary). We also got some creepy-looking cider stuff that Craig raved about. Back at my house Craig and I ended up playing on the Xbox for a long time while Erin took a nap.

When Jen showed up, she and I worked on making chicken fajitas and grilled corn. With that and the rest of the food we made, we all had a very pleasant evening together. We ate outside and talked and enjoyed the nice weather outside.

After dinner we all played Jenga together. It was a lot of fun but I got pretty tired after a while. We went to bed around 1am.

Aug 22nd 2004

six flags of fun

Jen and I were awake long before Craig and Erin. In fact Craig and Erin didn’t wakeup until I knocked on their door at 11:30am. We made plans to go out for breakfast this morning and I was getting pretty hungry.

We headed out to J. Christopher’s off Powers Ferry road. Because we were there so late, we had to wait about twenty minutes. While we waited for a table, we bought a Sunday newspaper and looked through the ads. It was another beautiful day outside.

Breakfast was as wonderful as I anticipated. I had the blueberry crunchcakes and they did not disappoint. I think Craig and Erin enjoyed their breakfast as well.

After breakfast we stopped at Publix to buy tickets to Six Flags. They were pretty expensive, but I bought all four tickets.

We stopped by my place to change and apply sunblock before heading to Six Flags. The drive over to Six Flags was pretty short and it cost around $10 to park. Because it was after noon, parking wasn’t that bad and we got a close spot.

(As Jen and I walked from the parking lot to the entrance)

Six Flags was fun. We rode many of the rides and had a great time. We actually managed to ride up front for the batman ride which made it very fun. However the highlight of the park was when we rode on the super man ride. I’ve never been one a ride where you lie in a prone position. It was pretty wild.

It must have been very popular too because we had to wait in line for a very long time. It was worth the wait.

(Jen and I waiting in line for the Superman ride)

(Craig bought this photo of us after the ride)

The park closed around 6pm so we had to leave earlier than planned. Actually it was better that we left when we did because we were all getting pretty tired.

(Craig and Erin in my car after we left the park)

After Six Flags we went back to my place and got cleaned up. It felt great to have a shower. From there we drove over to Roswell for dinner. We went to Swallow at the Hollow. It was the first time I’ve been there for dinner.

Swallow at the Hollow is a fun. They had live music playing and the atmosphere was festive. It’s a great BBQ place made from an old barn. We had a lot of food. I had the chopped beef platter with baked beans and potato salad.

(Me in a thoughtful pose at the restaurant)

After dinner we drove over to Jen’s place to have some drinks after dinner. I made us all a chocolate martini. Lynne was home so we all hung out and talked for a while. We also watched a little bit of the Olympics.

Eventually Craig, Erin, and I left and drove back down to my place. Jen stayed home at her place because she has to go to work tomorrow.

Back at my house we watched more of the Olympics. While we were doing this, I logged into mpix.com and ordered prints for Jen and Mom. Eventually we all went to bed.

Aug 23rd 2004

send off

I woke up fairly early today in order to get some work done before Craig and Erin woke up. I managed to activate some code in production as well as a few other things.

Eventually Craig and Erin woke up and a short while later, after I wrapped up some stuff with work, we went out for lunch.

We drove over to Ashford-Dunwoody to Smokey Bones. I had the full rack of baby back ribs and loved every delicious rib! Craig and Erin were not able to finish their meals, so we had some take-home boxes.

When we made it back home I did some more work while Craig and Erin played Grand Theft Auto on my Xbox. The electricians came over to work on moving an outlet in the dining room. The electrician’s apprentice guy looked just like James W. from work!

After they completed their work, we decided to go see a movie. We went over to the theatre near Cumberland Mall and saw I, Robot. It was actually better than I expected given the bad reviews.

Once the movie was over we were starting to run out of time so we dashed back to my place for Craig and Erin to pack up the last of their things and then we headed down to the airport.

I dropped them off and went back to my place. I checked their flight a little while later and saw that they got first class going back which was cool.

I spent the rest of the evening playing Grand Theft Auto - Craig got me interested in playing again. It was pretty fun. I sometimes wish I had more time to play these games.

some warranty work

Today I worked from home because of all the warranty work that’s supposed to happen at my place that will require me to be there.

At 8am sharp the drywall people arrived. It was a short Mexican guy and a large white guy (the boss) who worked on my drywall stuff. The foreman guy didn’t do much work and after he left, the Mexican called him ‘gorgido’ which I understood to mean ‘fat guy’. It was pretty funny listening to the Mexican guy make fun of his fat boss and how much of a mess he makes. They did an excellent job.

Travis from Beazer came by with a painter but lamented that the drywall wasn’t dry enough to work so he asked about coming over later in the day.

I managed to get a lot of work done today despite not being in the office. I did a lot of work related to the clearcase project I’ve been working on.

Jen came over straight from work and we waited a bit for Travis and the painter to come back over. They never came over. I called Travis and got his voice mail.

We went over to Publix to get a lot of groceries. Afterwards we went back to my place and made dinner. We made BBQ chicken along with salad and sweet tea. It was a very good dinner and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Jen doing this.

After dinner we relaxed and I gave Jen a nice back massage using lotion.

A while after this Jen had to go back home. She left around 10:30pm. I spent the rest of the evening getting caught up on some TiVoed programs as well a working on my financial stuff.

I found a cool section of the Cobb County website in which many officially documents are scanned. I did a search on my name and saw that all of my mortgage documents were scanned for anyone to see.

With this newfound knowledge, I spent way too much time looking up detailed mortgage info on my neighbors and other people. It was an eye-opener to see how much detailed info is public information.

Aug 27th 2004

the best lunch ever

The first thing I did after getting to work this morning was to head over to the RCC. I hate going to meetings over in that building due to the crazy security measures. One cannot simply walk into the building (after going through the outside gatehouse check) and go about their business. In the case of the RCC, I have to submit to a thorough search and a lengthy sign-in procedure.

The morning meeting was pretty good. Carole, Jeff, Steve C, and others were in attendance. Someone from my former ‘life’ as a production control operator was there too. Liz P. who is still in charge of production control was in attendance. It was fun to see her again.

After the meeting I went back to my cube in the A3 building and worked on more clearcase stuff.

Lunch today was simply phenomenal. Melissa, Jegan, Sameer, Scott, and I went to buckhead to Rusan’s for lunch. We rarely go to the sushi buffet and today was extra special. Instead of the normal selection of rolls, they had quite a bit more.

I was very excited to see that eel nigri was one of the selections. While others were getting salad and things like that, I went straight to the eel and piled my plate with about a dozen of those and many other tasty-looking pieces of sushi.

(I was so excited about lunch that I used my phone to take a picture of my plate)

Because it was a buffet, I had a lot to eat and enjoyed every minute of it. It was one of the better lunches I’ve had in a long time.

Back at the office I worked on more clearcase stuff. My little clearcase reorganization project it almost done.

Before I went home I had a short meeting with Casey and Jegan.

When I got home I noticed a large box on my front porch. Larry’s housewarming gift arrived! He sent me a cool-looking ‘stool‘ made out of industrial rubber hoses and belts.

I worked on my laptop a while and then left for Jen’s house. I got there around 8:15pm. Jen still wasn’t home because she was out with Lisa to replace her cell phone after it broke earlier today.

While I waited, I looked through the photos that arrived from mpix.com. In particular, I looked closely at the 20×30 canvas print of a photo I took in Hawaii. It was a bit disappointing to see that it was a print glued to a canvas board, but the closer I looked at it, the more it grew on me. There was definitely canvas ‘texture’ to the surface of the print so it didn’t look that bad. Still, costing $85 for a glued-on canvas print seems steep and I won’t be getting the same thing again.

The other prints looked good, but a few weren’t as good as I would expect. They had flaws which looked like printing flaws. Maybe I had too high expectations from mpix.

I ate two ice cream pops while I worked on my laptop. Jen showed up a while later. She had a very bad day and was in a sour mood. Fortunately after a glass of white wine, she was doing much better. She had an expensive oil change, a dead cell phone, and problems with people at Best Buy.

Aug 28th 2004

two parties

I woke up around 9am to find myself at Jen’s house. We spend the night at each other’s place so often now that it’s easy to forget where I am anymore. In fact, it’s a rarity that we spend the night alone.

We woke up and decided to go to Jen’s parent’s house to pick up Chloe. On the way there we stopped at Chick-fil-A for some breakfast biscuits. We didn’t spend much time at her parent’s house but we did collect Chloe and drive back to Jen’s.

Back at Jen’s place we took Chloe for a walk around the neighborhood and adjacent nature trail. Afterwards we spent some time at Jen’s house. During that time I made reservations for us to go white water rafting tomorrow using a coupon that Jen has.

The trip will be at 11:30am on the Ocoee River. It should be a lot of fun. The last time I was white water rafting was with Craig long ago in Colorado and that was a blast.

We made two key-lime pies together before packing up the car and taking Chloe back to her parent’s house. We then drove back to my place but Jen wasn’t feeling very good so she took a nap. I did some work downstairs but joined her for a while. It felt nice to relax together on the bed in the afternoon.

When Jen woke up we made some snacks and eventually got ready for Christin’s party. We took the pies with us and went to Christin’s house for a dinner party. Tonight there were more people there than last time.

Christin and Kyle catered BBQ and it turned out really good. The food was great; we had margaritas and hung out in the back patio with the others. It was a very nice time.

We didn’t stay too long because we had a second party to go to. So, we left around 8:30pm and headed over to Tom’s house for a going-away party. It was all of Jen’s kung-fu friends as one of the guys is moving away to Arizona.

I’ve met most of the people at least once before but there were a few new faces this time. Jen introduced me to some of the new people and we mingled and talked with others.

It was a fun party and Tom is a fun guy. Jen’s brother and sister were also there so I didn’t feel like too much of an outsider.

We actually stayed pretty late and didn’t leave until around 12:30am. We went back to Jen’s house and went to bed.

Aug 29th 2004

white water rafting

It was rough waking up at 7am this morning because we were up so late last night. I was tired but strove to get ready and pack up Jen’s car.

We drove about 1.5 hours north to an ocoee river place in Tennesee. We allotted about three hours to get there so we had a lot of spare time. We drove around the area and stopped at a local restaurant for some breakfast.

It felt good to have some food and time to unwind after the drive. After breakfast we drove over to the rafting place and got signed in and suited up. We went with a tour of seven other people. They all pretty much knew each other so we felt a little out of place.

We all went on two rafts. Jen and I shared a raft with one other person and a guide. The rest of the people piled into another raft.

The rafting trip was pretty fun. We never got dumped out of the raft, and it never capsized. Jen and I sat in front and a couple of times we both nearly fell out. We went down class 3 & 4 rapids.

The weather was great and the water wasn’t too cold. The whole trip lasted about a couple of hours. Towards the end, the guide let me sit on the front pommel of the raft to ride that way down the last set of rapids. That was a lot of run. They call it ‘riding the bull’ because you have to hang on to a rope perched on the front of the raft.

We went back to the base camp area and I tipped the guide. Jen and I weren’t ready to leave yet, so we drove down to the Ocoee Olympic Park area.

It was situated at the upper Ocoee falls part of the river where the dangerous class 5 rapids are. We parked and walked around the paths near the river. I took some photos and it was pretty fun. I’ve love to go up there again - especially with a nice zoom lens and a monopod.

(I asked someone with another Canon SLR to take our picture)

Jen drove back on the way home. I worked on my laptop some from the passenger seat of the car. When we got back to Jen’s house it was getting late so I mowed her lawn.

(After I mowed the lawn, I took a photo of this large spider on the fence)

We were still feeling energetic so afterwards we took a long walk throughout the neighborhood. To reward ourselves we went over to the Mexican place across the street and sat outside to have margaritas and bean dip.

It was a nice night and Jen called up Lynne to see if she wanted to join us, which she did. She was actually on her way home from work when Jen called so it worked out great.

We sat outside in the afternoon sun and had a great time eating chips and drinking margaritas. It was a great way to end the day.

We went to bed a little while after we got back to Jen’s house. However I was paged at 3am regarding a database problem. It was a bridge call with a few other people working the problem. I ended up working about an hour on the call before going back to bed.

Aug 30th 2004

introduction to the silver comet trail

My drive to work from Jen’s house took a bit longer than usual because I left late. I left late because I slept late due to the late-night production call.

When I got into work around 9am, I was met with a similar database problem as last night. I worked with Brett from the DBA group and then called up Bob C. to see if he could look at the MVS environment to see if there is any contention.

Sure enough, there was a ton of OMNI reporting jobs running which were sucking up the available resources. Bob immediately dropped their priority and the problem went away. It looks like that was the same problem last night too.

Later in the day there were some problems with a production activation I did, but we got it all taken care of.

After work I helped Casey with upgrading his TiVo to a new hard drive.

When I got home, I took a short nap (I was still a bit tired from last night). A little while later Jen came over. We made plans to go walking along the Silver Comet trail this afternoon before it got too dark.

I didn’t have my tennis shoes with me so I wore my tevas. This turned out to be a bad decision. Jen and I have never been to the Silver Comet trail before so it was pretty fun to explore it together. We got there close to sunset so we didn’t have much time.

We walked around for about an hour before it got to dark so we had to head back. Unfortunately that short period of time results in some blisters on my heels from the tevas. Next time I’ll wear appropriate shoes.

After this Jen and I had a pretty nice evening together. We took it easy and watched some television. Jen read and I gave her a back rub. In all we had a very nice time together.

Aug 31st 2004

mixing things up in the morning

Jen and I took our time getting ready for work this morning. It was nice to mix things up and resulted in a great way to start the day.

I got into work around 8am and worked on more clearcase stuff. There was a 9am meeting (which I wasn’t invited to) where they decided to go ahead with an aborted production load from yesterday.

After the 10am core team meeting I went to lunch with some others to Willy’s. We sat outside and it was very nice out.

When I got back to work I did the production activation as well as worked on new views for everyone. I finally got everything set up for the new branching strategy and new views so I sent out a lengthy email to the development team with instructions.

Before leaving work I attended a very heated meeting about design choices.

I was up until about 1am tonight doing laundry.
