My kind of town, Chicago is

Around 3pm Jen left her workplace to drive down to the airport. She arrived about an hour later.

I met her in the parking lot and took her laptop up to my desk. She didn’t want to leave her laptop in her car and also didn’t want to take it with her on the trip, so I offered to lock it in my desk.

We went to the airport and made our way to the gate. To my surprise the airport wasn’t as crowded as I thought it would be given that it’s a holiday weekend. Maybe the extra security lines have really helped.

It didn’t look very likely that we would make the flight. We were #9 and #10 on the standby list and the board showed only four remaining seats not sold or checked-in.

(I used my camera phone to snap a photo of Jen in the airport)

As I was trying to mentally prepare myself for a stress-filled evening missing flights, Jen pointed to the gate display screen and said that we got seat assignments! There was only one seat left after us. That’s cutting it pretty close. We had to sit in the very back of the plane (not together) but at least we got on the flight.

Jen studied during the flight and I read my book. The flight up to Chicago was only supposed to be 1 hour and 30 minutes but it took two hours because we (for some reason) circled around the airport for thirty minutes. It’s pretty frustrating when you’re near the destination and they announce the 15-minute marker (that’s when you have to place the seatbacks upright, tray tables away, blah blah blah) but you have to wait much longer.

When we finally landed and taxied to the gate, we deplaned and got on the Avis shuttle bus for the rental car. Beign a ‘preferred’ Avis member is pretty cool. The drive dropped us off near the car and told us what stall it’s in and that the contract and everything is already in the car for us.

Sure enough, our car (A blue Ford Focus) was all ready to go. All I had to do was stop briefly at the exit to show the guy the contract and we were off! I have to say that I’m very pleased with the service that Avis provided.

Jen navigated. She did a wonderful job. It took us only about twenty-five minutes to drive from the airport to the hotel. Due to my inexperience with Chicago, I used Priceline to get us a nice hotel but the only problem is that it’s in the ghetto-side of town. We went to the Hyatt off of Martin Luther King Road.

When we got to the hotel it was jam packed with people and cars. A hotel guy waved us over as I tried to approach the check-in area. I told him that we have reservations but he said that there is no parking! He suggested that we check-in and then try to find someplace to park. I was about to go through with this when Jen suggested we see if the parking deck is truly full.

It’s a good thing I heeded her advice. The parking deck was nearly completely empty!! We got a good parking spot and made our way down to the lobby.

The lobby area was like a zoo. It was packed with people. Jen and I were the only caucasians there, so I felt a little out of place. We quickly checked in and made our way up to our room on the 21st floor.

The room was very nice. We have a king-size bed (with down comforter and feather pillows). The view was spectacular as it looked out toward downtown.

Jen informed me that she had a surprise. She stopped by a liquor store and bought some of those mini-bar sized bottles of alcohol. She got lots of different ones, including chocolate-flavored vodka. We had this in a Pepsi (the vending machines didn’t have coke!). It was great! We each had two of those.

We hung out together in the room and got freshened up. Jen called her brother Scott who coordinated with us to meet him and her Sister and cousins somewhere north of downtown. We went down to the lobby and caught a taxi to our destination.

Once there we met up with Scott, Katie, Brian, Brad, and others. We went to a nearby by and sat outside. It was in the high 70’s but I was freezing. I think I’ve gotten too acclimated to the hot & humid 90’s from Atlanta.

The plan was to go on a ‘pub crawl’ all night long. We are supposed to go along every stop that the ‘L’ train goes and find a new bar until they are all closed.

Our next stop was a cool place called the ‘Tiny Lounge‘. It was pretty small inside and actually reminded me a lot of a lounge in St. Maarten called ‘Sopranos’. I had a chocolate martini which was spectacular. Even the straw was made out of chocolate.

We found an area to sit in the back and all talked for a while. Jen’s cousin Brian was a pretty cool guy. I didn’t get a chance to speak with Brad much.

As we were about to head to the next pub, Jen and I decided to call it a night. We wanted to get an early start tomorrow so we excused ourselves. The cab ride up to this area was around $30 so we decided to take the train to a location a bit closer to our hotel and then get a taxi from there.

We made it back to the hotel and went to bed. We were both quite tired.

Jen’s family

We woke up around 8:30am. Jen urged me to hurry along because we want to get an early start today. We took a shower and packed up.

After getting everything together, we checked out of the hotel and left our bags with the bell desk to retrieve later.

Jen and I took a taxi into downtown to a place called Lou Mitchell’s. It’s a popular breakfast place that Jen wanted to go to. I was worried that there might be a long line given that it’s a holiday weekend. Usually it’s very busy on a Saturday morning. We managed to get seated right away.

As we were shown our table, an employee came by with a basket f doughnut holes and offered me one. I had two. They were very good.

(Jen at breakfast)

I had the Belgium waffles for breakfast while Jen had an omelet with some great tasting potatoes. She shared the potatoes with me.

After breakfast, as we were paying, we decided to buy a large cookie to have later today.

It was nice to spend this time together today. We walked about ten blocks down to the Art Institute of Chicago. Jen bought tickets and I had to check my backpack.

We went through the museum at a very fast-pace. I was looking forward to seeing the Seurat exhibit (specifically the one from ‘Ferris Bueler’s Day Off‘).

When we went to the impressionists exhibit, I got to see one of my favorite Renoir paintings:

(Two Girls on the Terrace)

One of the other memorable parts of the museum was the weapons & armor exhibits as well as the miniatures exhibits. Jen and I saw a two-handed sword. I never realized those were so large. It was about ten-feet long and the crossbars on the hilt were about 3.5 feet long. It was such a huge weapon!

The miniatures exhibit was cool because a few dozen ‘models’ were represented. Every model was of a different ‘room’ inside different buildings from different periods of time. Some of them were grand halls from France while others were places like kitchens in early America. It was pretty cool to see all of the intricate detail.

In total, we spent about three of four hours at the museum. Afterwards we walked a few blocks down the street to a pizza place where Scott and Katie planned on meeting us for lunch.

(Jen in front of the museum)

It was mostly empty when they seated us. We ordered some water and an appetizer while we waited. Scott and Katie arrived after a short while. We talked and ate the appetizer.

For lunch we ordered a Chicago-style stuffed pizza. It took a long time to get but once we had it, the wait was well worth it. The pizza is made like a real pie with the sauce on top instead of cheese. It was really good.

When we left, Scott and Katie offered to give Jen and I a lift back to the hotel. They parked nearby in the underground parking lot area. Apparently in downtown Chicago the underground area is filled with parking garages instead of subways. It’s pretty cool.

They dropped us off in the ghetto at the hotel and we got our bags and went to the car. It cost $23 to park there since last night. Chicago is expensive.

We followed Jen’s directions and drove into the suburbs to her cousin’s (Heather) house in Carole Stream. Jen’s Dad’s side of the family is having a Fourth of July gathering.

In total, there were about twenty people in the large house. It was nice to meet everyone and I’m terrible with names so the only person whose name I remember was someone else named Jeff.

They convinced Scott to do a kung fu demonstration for the kids in the back yard. I think he was a bit embarrassed to do that. Heather’s husband (who was also hosting the party) had some special ‘overproof’ Rum which he got as a gift from Jamaica. He challenged anyone to have a shot because it’s so potent. A few people had shots and it was pretty funny to see their reactions.

Jen and I left the house around 7pm. Scott and Katie followed us in their car. We followed Jen’s directions to go to Sycamore, IL which is deep in the farm country. Scott and Katie somehow got lost following us. Jen talked them through the rest of the directions.

Our hotel was a budget-looking place called AmeriHost. They messed up Jen’s reservations but we got everything straightened out. The room was freezing cold because the air conditioner had been set to the coldest temp, so we fixed that.

We were planning on going out with Scott and Katie to see Spider Man 2. I was pretty excited about this. However, Jen’s cousin Kevin called us up and dissuaded us from seeing the movie. Instead we were going to go out with him and others to a bar.

He came by the hotel in a large van and picked us up. He took us into ‘downtown’ Sycamore to a biker bar with lots of motorcycles out front.

Inside was country music playing and NASCAR on all of the TV’s. It was an interesting experience. We all made our way to the back and had some drinks. Jen and I were pretty tired so we didn’t have such a great time but we were stuck there.

We finally left around 1am and went straight to bed.

Fourth of July

Jen and I woke up around 8:30am. We were both hungry and went down to breakfast near the front desk.

Once down there we met up with some more of Jen’s family. Many of the people visiting for the picnic today are staying that this hotel. I was still pretty tired and groggy so I’m sure I didn’t make a great impression.

Jen and I had breakfast. I had water and a waffle. After breakfast we went back up to the room to get ready. While Jen took a shower, I checked the flights today and called Avis to reschedule the car return for tonight instead of tomorrow morning.

I took a shower, dressed, and packed up my stuff. We checked out of the hotel and drove over to Kevin’s house. The drive only took about fifteen minutes and led us through vast areas of farmland. We traveled down a long gravel road until we finally reached our destination.

When we arrived, I was recruited to help move two large picnic tables over to the front yard. Kevin’s house is a real farmhouse complete with a barn. Jen and I helped entertain Kevin’s two children who are around seven years old. They showed us the barn which had chickens, rabbits, and cats. Jessica (the little girl) was happy to show off the newborn kittens. They were pretty small.

She also went into the chicken coup to collect fresh eggs. She found a couple of eggs which weren’t any good (I guess they were cracked?) and so she threw them on the floor of the coup. In a frenzy all of the chickens descended upon the newly-cracked egg and began the devour it. Jen screamed and jumped in fright as the chickens engaged in their cannibalistic activity. That was very funny!

Jessica also showed us their two cows. She happily told us their named and explained that they eat them every year and get new ones for the next year. I guess that’s how things are on a farm.

Next we went with the two kids to pick fresh raspberries from the raspberry bush bramble. We spent quite a bit of time picking berried and ended up with a lot. I think their mother is going to make a raspberry pie from them. I was sad that we wouldn’t be able to have any.

The rest of the day is a bit of a blur. I met many more of Jen’s relatives. They all seem like nice people. Going to Jen’s family reunion reminded me of the times I went to my own family reunions.

There was a lot of food and we ate a lot. I had some great teriyaki chicken which was nice and tender. I also had some good grilled pork chops. Jen even tried the pork chops and liked them. One of her relatives brought over a huge bowl of pico de gallo. He actually reminded me of my uncle Jimmy. The pico de gallo was very good and I ended up eating a lot of that.

We also had lots of different deserts. Jen and I had a few drinks. I think she had a little more than I did, actually.

Shortly before we left, Jen and I walked around and snapped some photos of the surrounding cornfields. I also tried to get some ’stock-like’ photos of the cornstalks & areas for Jen.

(Jen caught me taking pictures of cornfields)

(Cornfield)

(Jen and I)

Around 4pm we changed into our ‘airplane’ clothes and headed out. It took about an hour to drive to the airport. We returned the car with no problem and caught the shuttle bus to the airport.

We were doing great on time and had about 1.5 hours to kill. Jen and I went into a bar near the gate and ordered some drinks. We just got coke and sprite. Jen tried to be all sneaky and poured her mini-bar-sized bottles of alcohol into our drinks. She put Jack Daniels in the coke and apple-flavored vodka into the sprite. We also munched on fries. It was a lot of fun hanging out with Jen in the airport bar.

(Jen trying to be sneaky in the bar)

Around 45 minutes before departure we went over to the gate. The screen indicated that we were number 9 and 10 on the standby list. There were well over 100 open seats on the plane so we weren’t worried about missing the flight.

We got lucky and ended up in first-class - seats 5A and 5B. Jen had a glass of wine and I had water. After we got airborne, I pulled out my laptop to get some work done. It’s a hell of a lot easier to use the laptop in first class than it is in coach. During the flight I had a drink and Jen had another glass of wine.

While we were eating our snacks, Jen accidentally spilled her red wine all over herself. We got a flight attendant who took Jen up to the galley to give her some club soda to wash out the stain.

The rest of the flight went smoothly. As we started our approach into Atlanta, it was sufficiently dark outside and clear. I looked down below and could see dozens of fireworks going off.

It was quite a sight to behold. We were flying over north Atlanta and looking down I could see all these fireworks going off at the same time - almost like a battlefield. I could make out that many of the smaller ones were things like roman candles and such while in the distance were the huge commercial displays. The fact that it was all happening at the same time and all over the place was what made it so cool.

When we arrived in Atlanta, we quickly caught the shuttle bus back to the office. I took Jen upstairs to my desk so we could retriever her laptop. I also showed her around a little for a very brief period of time. Afterwards, we both drove our cars back to my house.

SP2 holiday

Normally it would be a work day today but I have off of work due to the holiday. Jen and I had some cereal for breakfast.

After breakfast she challenged me to a multiplayer game of halo. I never played Halo multiplayer and played the console version only very briefly. It was difficult to get used to the controls as I’m used to playing first person shooter games with a keyboard and mouse. Jen was obviously quite skilled at Halo and kicked my butt. It wasn’t so cool to have her one-shot-kill me with a shogun from over 200-yards away.

When we stopped playing that, I invited her to play Samurai Shodown. We played a couple of games and it felt good to actually win!

With the game-playing out of the way, I helped Jen with some homework. We did a DNS lab together and I also worked on my computer.

I don’t know what gave me the idea but I decided that it would be ‘fun’ to ‘quickly’ install XP SP2 RC2 onto my laptop. I was dying to see the new native Bluetooth support.

That wasn’t such a smart idea. I had lots of trouble with it, mainly because my brand of Bluetooth radio (HP pavilion zt3200) wasn’t natively supported. I had to edit the bth.inf file that SP2 installed and manually add my adapters USB HW ID so it would be recognized. Once that happened, everything worked correctly.

Jen needed to go home so she left. I remained behind to get some housework done. Soon after she left, I swept the garage and painted the garage-floor with some special cement paint. It was supposed to be grey but turned out to be white. I used the whole gallon to paint the little one-car garage. The paint didn’t look completely even so I need to apply a second coat. I’ll try to do that tomorrow.

Before I went to bed, I went through the photos I took from the trip to Chicago and post-processed them. I put some of the notable ones up into an album in my photo gallery.

no photography class for Jeff

It was a pretty busy day at work today. As soon as I arrived at work I went to the weekly staff meeting.

For lunch today a few of us went to Pizza Hut for the buffet. The pizza wasn’t all that great. James noted that the last two times he went to this pizza hut, bad things happened: The first time was when the Concorde crashed, and the second time was on 9-11.

I got an email today which made me very sad:

“You are registered for Art of Seeing Photographs - Digital (051PFNA2340A) which was scheduled to begin July 13th. I am sorry to inform you that, due to low enrollment, we have cancelled this class. Please call our registration office at 770-423-6765 and let them know if you would prefer a refund or transfer to another class. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience.”

This is the second time I’ve signed up for a photography class and it has been canceled. I was really looking forward to this one. I emailed the instructor and he made it sound like a very fun course.

I also got a lot of personal things completed today. I switched over my SpeedFactory billing to my bank account from my Chase card. I got web access to my Delta Employees Credit Union savings account, mortgage account, and home equity loan account. I also mailed off a letter to American Express asking that they don’t send me junk mail.

This afternoon I had the Network Systems PAT meeting. This is the third time in a row that I presented a ‘deep dive’ overview of the Revenue Pipeline project. All three sessions lasted the entire 1.5 hours. When I finished the audience was very thankful for my presentation and commended me for doing a great job. I’m glad it went so well.

When I got home I saw a large box in front of the garage door. The table arrived! I lugged it upstairs and changed into some comfy clothes. I took everything out of the box. Fortunately it was easy to set up. There was the main tabletop piece and four legs.

However, there was a problem. The left-most drawer face was badly cracked and damaged. I could press the broken pieces back together (and possibly use wood glue to keep is sturdy) but the crack along the face was still visible. In addition the front left corner of the table is badly gashed. It looks almost as if it was dropped on the corner from a decent height.

The instructions had a phone number to call for missing parts of problems. I called the number but got a voice mail (it was around 6pm EST) so I’ll try again tomorrow.

I still set up the table and placed it in the entry way. It fits perfectly and I’m very happy with it.

After doing the work with that, I made some dinner. I had the cheese ravioli things that Jen introduced me to. While making dinner I re-arranged the pantry and put some things away. I also cleaned up around the kitchen and living room.

When I finished dinner, I swept the floors and used the small sample of HartCo ‘Easy Clean’ floor cleaner to mop all of the floors on the main level. They looked shinier after I cleaned them.

Jen and I talked about me possibly joining her in the hotel she’s staying at down in Peachtree City. She went out for dinner with some coworkers and didn’t get finished until around 11pm. It was too late for me to join her so we just talked on the phone for a while. She seemed pretty distraught that we couldn’t spend the night together tonight. Hopefully things will work out for tomorrow.

I was happy to get a lot done but I still have a lot of things I want to complete before the housewarming party on Saturday.

caught up

I’m finally caught up on all of my journal entries. Every since I moved, I’ve been at least a week behind, and now I’m all caught up! It feels so good!

I was delayed going into work this morning because I wanted to activate the new ticket retriever code in Integration for James T. early enough so that John could begin testing as soon as possible. I worked with James to get the right info and activated the code from home.

Today was scheduled to be a pretty busy day for me. I have meetings pretty much all day long. Things changed a little though as some meetings got rescheduled. I attended a meeting with Carole to discuss the initial backloading test to examine errors.

I had to leave the meeting early to go check on something for integration test. We’re trying to collect information on the recent ticket retriever changes and I needed to make sure that the stats collecting script was running and gathering the right data.

Around 10:30am I called the phone number for the entryway table with the broken drawer. I spoke with a guy who had a foreign-sounding accent. I explained what happened and he said that the table is discontinued but he can send me a replacement drawer. I want to check with Jen to see how she feels about the dent in the corner of the table before deciding if I should do anything else about it.

We took Veena out to lunch today for her birthday. We went to the Jamaican restaurant. I had the wonderful boneless jerk chicken breast with yellow rice and black beans. It was delicious!

The 1pm integration call was pretty short and I monitored the environment. I saw some database errors so I contacted John who coordinated a fix with the DBAs.

I emailed the warranty division at Beazer about my water leak in the ceiling:

“In the front part of the home is the dining-room with a bay-window. The ceiling in the part of the dining room inside the bay-window area (which protrudes out from the front of the house) has a ‘line’ in the ceiling where there is visible water damage. It’s not actively dripping right now but I’m not sure how much damage is done from what is just visible on the ceiling. We have been having lots of rainstorms almost daily now for the past few weeks.”

I got a response within an hour indicating that someone would be calling me within 24 hours.

Around 4pm I left work to go to my dentist appointment. I was about ten minutes late. Shortly after I got there I was summoned to go get treatment. Today they just did a ‘polishing’. The dentist was very nice to me. She showed me the correct brushing technique for the inside of my teeth. She also gave me tips for flossing.

Before I left I made another appointment for two fillings in two weeks. I also have another cleaning appointment in four months. Hopefully everything will continue to be good.

While I was being worked on, John paged me to let me know that everything seems to be good in integration test. I drove straight home.

When I got home around 5:20pm I was surprised to see that the wine rack had not arrived yet. They told me on the phone yesterday that it would be delivered between 1pm and 4pm today. As they instructed, I left a note on the door authorizing them to leave it there with no signature. I’ll call tomorrow to see what’s up.

Around 8pm I packed up some stuff and left the house. Jen invited me to join her at her hotel in Peachtree City tonight. It took me about 45 minutes to drive there as it was further than I thought.

It was great to see Jen. The last time we saw each other was on Monday. We hung out and spent the night together - it was very nice.

deliveries

I woke up this morning around 6:30am in Jen’s hotel room. We each took a shower and got ready. I helped myself to a banana that the hotel provided while Jen took her shower.

I left the hotel around 7:30am. The drive into work from Peachtree City was different than I’m used to and it took about the same length of time if I had been coming from my house.

Work today was a fairly typical Friday. Today I spent some time working on integration testing calls for some ticket retriever changes.

For lunch some of us went to BBQ kitchen. I was sorely disappointed when I found out that they don’t serve meatloaf or cucumbers & onions on Friday’s.

I met with some people to go over our disaster recovery plan. Before meeting, I went though documentum to look at some of the other DR plans. I was horrified to find that some of them contained production username/password info as a part of the recovery steps. This didn’t sit well with me.

During the meeting we struggled again to define what exactly it is that we need to cover. I think the entire COB (Continuity of Business) project needs a better vision before launching this effort. I was told that the whole thing may change and we’ll have to re-do everything. This doesn’t make much sense to me.

After the meeting, I had some questions so I talked with Brian. He explained that the recovery steps should be written such that any generic developer could follow - including username & passwords. I argued this with him, but he explained that this is the procedure. I’m really not comfortable putting down the ID & password to our production environment into a word document that will be stored on a public repository. Even if it is stored in a secure location, I still disagree with the idea that the authentication information be stored anywhere. I intend to follow-up on this because it doesn’t seem right to me.

In the afternoon we had a meeting to discuss the backloading test. We’re trying to identify any potential problems now upfront before we enter formal system test.

I had to work with Alex and Casey to build some last-minute changes for the 1.4.5 integration test.

Jen left work early and wanted to see if I could leave early too so we could meet at Costco near her office. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to leave early so she went by herself. She’s going to be buying some stuff for the housewarming party tomorrow.

I ordered a wine tower thing from Amazon last week sometime and it was scheduled to be delivered to my place on Wednesday. It was being shipped by some obscure shipping company called Eagle USA (EGL). I’ve never heard of them before. Instead, I got a call on Wednesday from the shipping company to arrange delivery. They said that it would be delivered on Thursday between 1 and 4pm. It never arrived at all on Thursday (yesterday). So this morning I called them to see what’s up. They said that it would be delivered today between 1 and 4pm. During the day today the driver called to get directions. I gave him directions and he said that he knew exactly where my place is and it should be no problem.

I went home and worked on cleaning things up. While I was working, Jen called a few times to get my thoughts on some things to buy for tomorrow. She’s planning on coming to my house straight from Costco.

4pm came and went. When it was 5pm, I called up the shipping company again to see what the deal with my delivery is. They put me on hold while they contacted the driver. They came back and said that the driver was on his way and would be at my place ‘in a few minutes’.

The driver didn’t show up until 6:45pm. I don’t know how ‘a few minutes’ can mean nearly two hours.

Jen arrived at the same time that the guy delivered the wine rack. In addition to bringing a ton of food & drink for tomorrow’s party, she brought some gifts for me too.

At Costco Jen got me a nice-looking indoor plant. I put it in the corner in the living room near the stairs. It looks great there. She also bought me two wireless controllers for the Xbox! They work great and look cool. That was really nice of Jen to do all of those things.

Yesterday my package from J&R arrived at Jen’s office and she brought it by today. I got the Buffalo indoor omnidirectional antenna for my access point as well as the Canon 100mm USM Macro lens.

I was eager to test out the new antenna due to my problems with signal strength earlier. I put the laptop in the dining room running netstumbler to get a good baseline control measure of the signal strength to the upstairs access point.

I then unplugged the AM antenna I rigged up and observed the differences. As I expected, the signal strength went way down.

When I plugged the new, ‘correct’ antenna into the access point, signal strength only went up marginally. This didn’t make sense. I then spent the next few minutes playing with the antenna and moved it to different locations and oriented it differently. Nothing seemed to help.

Finally, I unplugged the antenna from the access point and noticed that the signal strength skyrocketed. It went up to a point even higher from when I started! This didn’t make any sense! I was starting to get a bit frustrated.

I checked myself and decided to not mess with it for a while so I could calm down.

While Jen worked on putting things away, I assembled the wine tower. It didn’t take too long and ended up looking great. We positioned it in the dining room and it matched the rest of the items perfectly.

Jen had to leave because she hasn’t been to her house for many days. We agreed that I would finish up some work around the house and go up to her place later tonight.

After she left I used my new 100mm macro lens to take a picture of the distant sunset:

I can’t wait to use this lens more.

Time was running out so I started working a lot more seriously on the cleaning effort. I also did some more playing around with the antenna and still couldn’t make heads or tails of it. Even when I used it with the access point downstairs, it didn’t make much different in signal strength. I’m sorely disappointed in the product.

I worked really hard on getting the downstairs study cleaned up. It took a long time but I finally got it all done. I also cleaned up the rest of the house. Jen called to let me know that she was going to bed but I assured her that I would be coming over still.

Not wanting to leave work unfinished, I continued to get things done and didn’t leave my place until midnight. On the way to Jen’s house I stopped at Wendy’s to get some dinner. I was pretty tired and hungry.

When I got to Jen’s house I quickly ate and then climbed into bed with her. It was nice to sleep with Jen tonight.

Jul 10th 2004

housewarming party

So much happened today that I have no idea how it all transpired in just one day.

Jen and I woke up around 6am. I wanted to sleep more, especially considering that I didn’t get to bed until after 1am. Jen was persistent, however, and jumped up and down on me saying, ‘wake up! wake up! wake up!’

It was pretty tough for me to wake up. In fact it was very hard for me to wake up. I slowly got ready and took a shower, etc. We had to get up so early today so that we could attend Jim’s Air Force retirement ceremony. The ceremony is at 7:30am so we need to be there no later than 7:15am.

I printed off the directions on Jen’s printer and then realized that we needed to hurry. I was sure that we would be late and so was a bit flustered and stressed about that.

Things weren’t so bad, however. We arrived at Dobbins AFB just in time and were not late at all. We met Mom, Jim, and Mom-Mom in a reception room along with some other people. They had doughnuts, muffins, and coffee.

About fifteen minutes later we all filed into a briefing room. A lot of people were already seated - mostly all military people in either jumpsuits or blue dress uniforms.

The actual retirement ceremony for Jim was pretty interesting. Different people stood up to give a short speech bidding him farewell and most of them dispensed gifts. Jim’s boss, a brigadier general, gave him several official-looking documents which looked almost like diplomas.

I had my camera with me and used the 50mm lens to its fullest. I didn’t want to use a flash but the light was low since we were indoors. The first thing I did was photograph the back of the program to set a custom white point. I then bumped the ISO up to 800 and shot wide-open. This gave me enough speed to photograph at 1/90s and 1/180s. I was at just the right distance to get a nice composition with the 50mm lens. I’m glad it worked out so well.

With the ceremony concluded, we filed back into the reception room to have more snacks. This time they had a great-tasting sherbet punch along with cheese, crackers, veggies, and meats. We hung out there for about an hour.

Next we walked over to a large hanger for the changing of command ceremony. Jim’s boss, the brigadier general is going to Colorado, so they are bringing in a new general to replace him. The hanger was full of people. I think it was the entire 94th wing of the air force the general commands.

We sat down in the reserved guest section. Some Cobb country government officials as well as Lockheed Martin representatives and many other people were in attendance. The ceremony was to officially pass on command to the incoming commander. It was pretty cool and seemed very traditional.

When this concluded, we all left to go have lunch at ‘On the Border‘ off Barrett Parkway. Lunch was pretty good. We had chips and queso to start with and for lunch I had two cheese enchiladas along with rice and beans. It was a good lunch.

Jen and I were planning on departing after lunch because we still had a lot to do before the party. However, Mom convinced me to go back to the base with them because we’re going to take a tour of the C-130 cargo plane.

We drove back down to the base and were taken out onto the runway to a large C-130 plane. It was currently having work done to the radar but they paused their work to let us onto the plane to look around.

The C-130 is a large plane. It reminds me a lot of the gigantic C-5 galaxy cargo planes I saw in Texas. We went up into the cockpit where there are four crew seats. We sat in the seats and took some pictures. Then we went to the back cargo hold area to look around.

(Jen and I in the cockpit of the C-130)

Jim explained that the cargo area can easily be changed to accommodate multiple missions. It had the ability to drop paratroopers, carry cargo, carry stretchers (up to 79 at once), and pretty much anything else that will fit. It was cool to see the plane.

With that concluded Jen and I excused ourselves and left the base. We drove back up to Barrett Parkway to go look at Linens-n-Things. I was looking for a towel holder for the powder room, toilet paper stand for the master bathroom, and a few other things. I have a 20% off coupon that I’m itching to use. We didn’t find anything.

Afterwards, we went over to Joann’s but didn’t find anything there either. Time was ticking away so we went back to Jen’s house. On the way there we also stopped at Target. I was still feeling pretty tired. We woke up early, I didn’t get much sleep, and we have done a lot so far today. I think Jen was a bit tired too.

We went back to Jen’s place where she and I packed some things up to take to my place for the party. Jen and I decided to take two cars down to my place. Because of that I left her place first since I was going to stop at the grocery store for some more supplies. She had some things to do around her place so she planned on leaving a little while later.

As I drove the usual route down I-575, I encountered heavy traffic. In fact, it was so bad that some people were turning around on the median (some were doing it right in front of the sign that says, ‘Keep off Median’ which was pretty funny). I grew increasingly frustrated as the traffic moved very slowly. I was tired and stressed and now having to deal with gridlock traffic wasn’t making it any better.

I sat in this slow traffic for about thirty minutes.

I thought I would be clever and exit on highway 5 to take back roads. However, as I was exiting I got a better view of the highway and saw that the traffic cleared up just past the exit. I drove down a ways to find a way to turn around and got back on the highway. It took me about an hour total to get home due to the traffic.

On the way to my house I stopped at Publix to get some stuff for the party tonight. Jen made a list and I got everything on the list. I also stopped by the liquor store to pick up some vanilla vodka.

When I got back to my house, Jen was already there. She helped me bring the stuff in and started putting it all away while I went through the house and did some final cleanup. We only had about 1.5 hours before the party started so we cut it a bit close.

I was actually hoping to take a short nap since I was so tired but I ran out of time. I fixed Jen and me a drink while we put the finishing touches on everything.

She did such a stellar job. She bought all of the food & snacks, prepared all of it, and put it all out on the table in a very nice presentation. I’m so incredibly thankful for her help. I don’t know what I would have done without her.

The party was a huge success. James and his girlfriend were the first to arrive right around 7:30am. I showed them around the house and got them each a beer (we had Corona). About ten minutes later Veena and her husband arrived. They brought a bottle of wine. I also showed them around and got them each a drink.

Jennifer’s classmate and friend, Kristen, arrived next. She brought a bottle of red wine. After she came, Anil and his family showed up too. They brought along their 6-year old daughter, Rhea, as well as their 8-month old newborn baby. They brought a gift-box from Crate & Barrel. It had a cool-looking serving dish with four square serving bowls that all fit inside the main dish.

Mallick called to let me know that he would be a little late. Carole and her two kids (Curtis, 6, and Hannah, 12) showed up. Carole brought me a nice gift basket which had a flower with a vase, two dish towels, and three porcelain white serving bowls which perfectly match my existing dinnerware. It was really cool how they were the same style as my new dishes.

Scott E. and his wife (Chrissie) arrived while I was showing Carole and her kids around. Jen must have let them in. They brought a BBQ grill utensils kit as a gift. It was really cool and had everything I needed for the grill.

A little while later, James and his date left. They were planning on going out somewhere else tonight.

It was pretty hectic with so many people. I had a hard time keeping up with all of the conversations. Lisa and Alan showed up next. The brought a nice 1.75L bottle of Fris Vodka. I was drinking Red Bull & Vodkas. This helped wake me up too. I love that taste. It reminds me so much of St. Maarten.

I was worried that Kristen, Lisa, and Alan might feel a little out of place because so many of my co-workers were there. Sameer called to let me know that he would not be able to attend. Larry also called. We chatted for a bit and agreed to talk more tomorrow because he needs some help with his new ISP.

Kristen left and then Mallick and his wife Anita showed up. They brought a bottle of Port Noir wine. I showed them around the now very crowded house. The food looked great but I never got a chance to eat much of it because I was too busy entertaining. The salsa was a big hit and everyone also loved the nutella chocolate spread.

Initially I played music via the Xbox but I stopped the music when I showed it off to James and his girlfriend. They played one of my games but later someone wanted to play old-school Pacman so I fired up the MameoX emulator to play that game.

I planned on taking lots of photos, but only managed to take one. As it was, the light was too low so I had to fire my fisheye lens with the flash. The onboard flash doesn’t work so well with the fisheye lens, so I had to do some work in Photoshop to lighten the scene correctly.

(A view of the party)

Anil and his family left next. Their 8-month old daughter was getting pretty tired so they needed to get home. Next Veena and her husband left.

Jen’s brother Scott was the last to arrive. He got a little lost but I helped him find his way. I showed Scott around and he mixed in with the crowd.

Carole and her kids left next. I’m really glad she was able to make it. It’s great that I have such a nice boss that I actually want to invite her to my place. I imagine for others they don’t have such a nice arrangement.

Scott E. and his wife, Chrissie, wanted to use my computer to look up movie info because they planned on maybe seeing a movie. I let him use my laptop.

Next Veena and her husband as well as Scott E. and his wife left. The party was starting to wind down with so many people leaving.

I played a game of Samurai Shodown with Scott who only wanted to play one game. Alan and I played the next game. Alan then accepted challengers after he defeated me. Scott left next.

Jen informed me that Lynne would be coming over after all. That’s pretty cool. Lynne came a little later and it was just Lisa, Alan, Lynne, and Jen. Alan and I played on the Xbox while the girls sat out on the deck.

Alan turned out to be quite a natural with the Xbox and defeated me every time I tried to kill him. I went outside to talk to the girls. Later Alan came out too and we all sat outside with our drinks and talked. It was pretty casual and nice.

Around midnight Alan, Lisa, and Lynne left. We sent them hold with a lot of food. Jen and I cleaned up a little bit and reveled in the success of the party. We also talked about how happy we are together and went to bed.

It was a very long and eventful day and I loved every minute of it.

increased dynamic range

I made plans with Mom and Mom-Mom for them to come over to my place this morning so they can see it. We didn’t set a time, but I suggested anytime after 9am.

Well I didn’t wake up until 9am. Jen was still in bed, so I went downstairs to hear my phone ringing. It was Mom. She wanted to know if I was asleep, I replied that I wasn’t sleeping. She seemed to think I was asleep because she already called two times this morning and I never heard the phone. I guess technically I _was_ asleep, but I’m not at the moment.

Anyway, she told me that they are on their way over and will be at my place in thirty minutes. I went upstairs to deliver the news to Jen. She requested that I make her some coffee while she gets ready.

I brewed Jen a pot of coffee while she took a shower and got ready. I quickly threw on the clothes I wore yesterday (comfy cargo shorts and a soft cotton t-shirt).

While we were downstairs doing some last-minute cleaning from the party, Mom and Mom-Mom showed up.

I have them a thorough tour of the house and they seemed to like it. We sat down in the living-room to look through some pictures and eventually went out for breakfast.

We went to J. Christopher’s off Powers Ferry road. I had the blueberry crunch cakes. It was so incredibly delicious. I happily gorged myself with the delicious food.

After breakfast we went our separate ways. Jen and I went back to my place but she didn’t stick around for very long because she needed to get home to work on school stuff.

I remained behind to wait for Mariah to look at the water damage on the ceiling in the dining room. I felt sort of weird sitting in the clean house with nothing to do. Actually I have a lot to do, but I no longer need to worry about unpacking stuff and putting things away.

Mariah came a little earlier than planned. She took a quick look and indicated that yes, indeed, there is water damage. She’s going to send someone out week after next to do a more thorough check. They will need to cut out a hole in the ceiling to measure the extent of the damage.

I took the opportunity of free time to finally photograph around the house. I did a room or two in the past but now with things mostly done (I’m still sorely lacking stuff on the walls) I feel that I can document all the rooms without too much embarrassment.

With my camera securely attached to the tripod, I made use of my 15mm fisheye lens stopped-down for f/16 for a large depth of field and sharper images. I used the mirror lockup and the self timer to get the most stable photos. I also bracketed each shot for combining later to increase dynamic range.

Using only available light indoors through the windows resulted in long exposure times. This created a cool effect for the ceiling fans because they rotate so fast.

(Living Room)

Once this exercise was done, I took the notebook downstairs into my now clean study and worked from there. It was essential that I bracket each shot because the light coming through the windows was so strong that it would completely blow out the windows in order to properly expose for the room. So at first I tried to use a pre-made action to combine the under-exposed and over-exposed images.

To my surprise and disappointment, this technique didn’t work so well. I had much better results when I simply pasted the under-exposed image as a new layer on top of the overexposed image and then adjusted the opacity of the top layer to 50%. I’m sure there is a much better way to do it, but I currently lack the knowledge.

Using most of the photos I took inside, I made a special photo album for my house. Some people have been complaining to me that I don’t have any photos posted on my website. Now I do.

I also post-processed all of the photos from the ceremony yesterday. All of this work took a lot of time and it was already early evening when I finished. Jen and I spoke and decided that we would spend the night at our respective houses tonight.

One of the things I meant to do today was to complete my self evaluation for work which was due Friday. I also wanted to complete some disaster recovery plan documentation for Scott. Alas, I was unable to do either.

I want some style

Early this morning I had a meeting across the street to discuss the business operational reports. I stopped by the A3 building first to gather some documentation and then walked over to the admin building with Casey.

It was a beautiful sunny day this morning. The sky was actually a nice shade of blue - something unusual for the summer here in Atlanta. The meeting wasn’t all that interesting so for part of the meeting I spent the time to make a list of things I want to get accomplished. I’ll add those as tasks in Outlook once I get back to my desk.

After the meeting I walked back to the A3 building by myself. It was still gorgeous outside. This made me think of after work and how cool it would be to go with Jen to the Mexican restaurant to have margaritas and eat chips and bean dip.

It must have been a coincidence because as I was thinking about Jen, she called me on my cell phone. She noticed that I wasn’t signed onto the IM client and was worried. I explained about the meeting and then asked about margaritas this afternoon. She liked the idea.

We had another conference call to discuss the supposed ‘TCP/IP’ errors within the system test environment. A few of us took a longer lunch today and went way up to the Lenox area to Pig & Chick. The food wasn’t all that great so I don’t know if I want to come back again. It’s too far to drive for lunch.

The rest of the day was pretty productive and I left around 4pm so I wouldn’t be late to my 5:30pm hair appointment. Jen was pretty busy at work so I had some trouble getting some info from her regarding the location of the place (Three 13) in Canton. I finally got some brief directions from her and headed out.

It took me about 1.5 hours to drive up there. This was pretty rough. I don’t like driving that long - especially for a haircut. I had trouble following Jen’s directions too. She told me the place was just before _East_ Piedmont but I only saw a ‘Piedmont’. It turns out that they are supposed to be the same.

So, I called Jen and got things straightened out and eventually made my way to Three 13. Three 13 is a fancy-looking, large hair salon. The exterior of the building is pink and gaudy looking and actually looks like a strip club.

As I was walking in, I got a page from Casey asking about a build he’s working on. I told the lady at the front desk about my appointment and she gave me something to fill out - like in a doctor’s office.

After I did this, I called up Casey to find out what’s going on. He was worried because the build was still running and it was only a few source files changed on a leaf-section of our dependency tree, so there should not have been a lot of rebuilding. I don’t know why it’s been taking so long, but I advised Casey to let it continue. I assured him that it is most likely not caught in a infinite-loop and that I would be more than happy to check on it when I get home so he doesn’t have to stick around and baby-sit it.

As I was talking to Casey, my hairdresser, Tiffany, showed up. I quickly got off the phone with Casey and greeted her. Tiffany was wearing huge clog-like shoes and walked in a funny sort of way. She took tiny little steps so it looks as if she was one of those geisha girls. He hair was block with a blonde-dyes stripe-looking thing in the middle.

She gave me a brief tour of the facilities. I looked for Jen because she was also there at the same time getting her hair colored. I couldn’t see her during my tour.

The first thing we did was talk about what I want done with my hair. I explained that “I want some style” but don’t want it to be high-maintenance. She seemed happy with this prospect and led me to the dark shampoo room.

I washed my hands and then she applied large amounts of this goopy-hand crème stuff to my hands. She then instructed me to dip my hands into this vat of melted paraffin wax. It was nice and warm. As soon as I extracted my hands, she sheaved my hands inside plastic bags and then placed large mittens over them. I felt like a big dork wearing these large mittens.

Tiffany washed my hair and then gave me a scalp massage. It felt great. She also gave me a back massage with one of those massage ball things. After my hair was all washed she removed the mittens and plastic wrap and wax. My hands felt really great and ‘fresh’. I could get used to a daily paraffin wax treatment.

Next we went back to her hair-dresser station and she dried my hair with a hair dryer. She then initiated the hair-cut. It only took about twenty minutes. Unlike the other placed I went to before, she took me back to the shampoo room to rinse my hair and then styled it for me. It looked really great. I appreciated the fact that she explained in great detail how exactly to style it on my own.

With my haircut over, she took me to the register to pay the bill. She didn’t stick around. The bill was $42. I paid with my credit card and specified an $8 tip. The cashier lady gave me $8 cash to give to Tiffany. I guess they prefer to get their tips in cash. I went back over to Tiffany and gave her the $8. It felt a little awkward.

I went out to the car and called Jen to see if she was done. I got her voice mail so I left and went to her house.

She called back a little while later asking why I didn’t stop by. I didn’t see her so I didn’t know where to go. Apparently her hair color thing takes a long time so I waited about an hour for her to get home. We decided to meet at the Mexican restaurant.

She got there before I did and we sat outside on the patio. We ended up drinking two half-pitchers of margaritas. They were pretty good. We also had great corn chips and bean & cheese dip. I had two cheese enchiladas. Dinner was nice and we had a great time. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t that great. It was pretty overcast and muggy this afternoon/early evening, unlike how it was earlier in the day.

dinner party

Jen and I got a lot accomplished before noon today. When I woke up, she was already in the living-room working on school stuff. We had some breakfast and then headed out to do some shopping. After all, it’s the weekend so that means it’s time to drop another $200 in shopping!

We first went down to Barrett Parkway to visit Costco. We spent about forty-five minutes there and I got a lot of stuff. I finally bought a printer (the one I had before died long ago). I got the HP PSC 1310 multifunction color printer for $100. Jen has a similar, but older, model and loves it. She’s also happy with the price/performance ratio of the ink refills.

Most of what I bought was food items for the dinner party tonight as well as other bulk-food items. Costco periodically changes out some of the items they sell in the center of the store. Today they had a lot of furniture. I saw an attractive-looking leather chair for $500. I tested it out and it felt great. I would certainly like to get a nice, comfortable, leather easy-chair to put in the living-room. I already have a spot picked out for it.

Jen showed me the living-room set (sofa, loveseat, chair) that she bought online. Well almost. It was a different color and a slightly different price, but it was close enough. I thought it looked great. The only problem is that she has to wait 6-8 weeks for her purchase to arrive. Jen complained that she likes instant gratification and doesn’t fancy waiting. She even said that she wants to cancel her order and get the local one instead.

I also got a new indoor plant for $17. This should be a nice addition to my house. It’s the same kind as the one Jen got me last weekend.

After Costco we stopped by Michael’s. Jen needed to get some posterboard for a class project. It’s the final project of one of her final classes for her Masters degree and they have her doing a posterboard presentation. She complained to me that she feels like she’s 12 years old again.

We also looked for new 8×10 mattes for some of the picture frames I bought. Alas, they did not have any for the size I was looking for. Just as we were about to leave, I spied some large mirrors. I need a mirror for an enclave area in the hallway from the foyer to the living room. They had mirrors on sale for only $35 - a steal! I didn’t know if it would fit, so I didn’t get it, but I did snap a photo with my cell phone:

After Michael’s we went back to Jen’s house. We got back around noon and had a salad for lunch. It was pretty good. I left a couple of hours later and drove home by myself. Jen stayed behind to work on school stuff. The plan is for her to come down to my house a little later.

When I got home I unpacked the car. The first thing I did after that was set up the new printer. It was a piece of cake to set up. I connected it to freeside (the WinXP box) and shared it on the network. I tested it out and was able to seamlessly and successfully associate it to my laptop. Now I can print from anywhere within range of my wireless network (but I still have to go downstairs to get the printout). It’s also a multifunction printer so it will do copies and is a scanner too.

While I was down in the study, I rebooted the linux box since I recently built a new kernel (2.6.7). It booted with no problem so I also finally added all of the necessary services to the rc startup scripts.

I spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning up my house and getting things ready for the party. At some point, Jen came over. She commented about how immaculate I keep my place. She helped out and we got a lot accomplished. I had lit candles set up everywhere and it looked pretty cool.

Eventually around 6pm we got everything pretty much done and put away. I made us both a couple of drinks and we sat in the living-room looking at some furniture online. Tonight we’re hosting a dinner party and invited her cousin Madeline and her fiancé, Peter. Also invited were her brother (Scott) and sister (Katie).

When Jen asked me to send Madeline directions, she told me that they live off I-20. I assumed this was I-20 west of town. Well they called around 6:45 indicating that they were lost. I was confused because I’m only supposed to be three exits north of them. We finally figured out that they are on the _east_ side of town and need to come all the way over to where I live.

Eventually they came over. I met Madeline once before but this was the first time I met her fiancé (first time for Jen too). Shortly after they arrived, Scott and Katie came over too.

Jen and I served out drinks and we all spent the next hour talking. During this time, I got dinner ready. Jen already went through the effort of chopping and marinating the portobello mushrooms as well as constructing a salad. She did a great job.

I grilled up the mushrooms as well as five ears of corn. I also grilled veggie hot-dogs and the veggie sausages.

I think everyone had a great time. Just like last weekend, the Xbox was a big hit. I demonstrated the video playback capabilities and then Scott and Peter played Mortal Kombat 2 via the MameoX emulator.

Because there were six of us and my dining-room table can only accommodate four people (it’s a small table), three ate in the dining-room, and three ate outside at the table there. It worked out better than I thought.

After dinner we sat around and chatted and listened to more music. Eventually they all went home.

It was great to have a successful party and I had a lot of fun hosting it. It’s amazing what one can do once they have a home larger than an 860 sqft apartment.

Jul 18th 2004

self evaluation

This morning I woke up before Jen (I think this usually happens whenever she has a lot of wine the previous night). I was feeling pretty productive so I went down to the study and finally installed the DVD writer (NEC 2500a) I bought weeks ago from Newegg. It was a piece of cake to install.

Once I got it installed, the very first thing I did was upgrade the firmware to the latest hacked version to enable faster burning as well as dual-layer support.

Of course I don’t have any DVD discs yet, so I can’t even burn anything. I spent about an hour online researching discs to buy.

While I was doing this, Jen woke up and we both had a bowl of cereal. Jen put a fresh banana in hers. Shortly after breakfast, Jen had to leave. She has been pretty stressed out about school and wants to get some work done.

After she left, I finally decided on some DVD+R media and bought a 50-disc spindle of 4x speed discs from Newegg. Apparently people have safely burned these at 8x on their NEC 2500a (hacked to 2510a) drives. Since I have the same drive, I figured this was the best choice in media.

I then spent a great deal of time in MS Money. I discovered that my 401(k) info can now be downloaded directly from Fidelity. I’ve been tracking this by hand since early 1999, so I have a lot of historical data. It will be nice to finally get some accurate data directly from my broker (My numbers are always slightly off from theirs).

Once I got it all set up I had problems. They don’t seem to update the share price of non-listed securities like the Delta Perfered Stock I have as well as the Delta Common stock fund that I also have. A much larger problem, however, appears that they do not seem to treat transactions as transactions.

The way I did things before is that I would transfer the money deducted from my paycheck into a cash account for my 401(k). This money would then be used to execute the ‘buy’ transactions for the securities in my portfolio. Everything worked out and it all balanced. Now, with the downloaded transactions, they aren’t even transactions! Instead Fidelity seems to treat my bi-monthly activities as ‘add shares’. Money has to make a guess at the share price of the security I bought. This doesn’t make me happy. In addition, my cash account got whacked-out and now shows a negative balance of ~$280.

I’m not sure if I like this ‘new’ way of doing my 401(k) but I’ll give it a try for a month and then re-evaluate. It shouldn’t be too hard to undo if I want to go back.

I also explored the ‘shoutcast‘ feature of my Xbox. I knew it existed but never played with it before. Now I had some time (I was procrastinating) so I poked around. It’s pretty cool. I have access to thousands of internet radio stations to pipe through the Xbox (and thus my stereo). There are all sorts of different stations. Some of the notable ones I saw was a station that plays nothing but old-school video game music all day long. Another was the Cobb county police scanner traffic. I had a lot of fun with this ‘new’ feature.

Finally today I finished my self evaluation for Carole. She wanted it by last Friday so I’m pretty late. I hope she doesn’t get too upset.

communications errors

I had an 11am meeting today where we discussed the communications errors in the system test environment. We decided to try a test to point ticket retriever to the integration database to see if we can reproduce the problem there. Actually I’m not so sure these are communications errors. The error message states that the protocol being used is “TCP/IP” and it seems that everyone latches onto that and calls these “TCP/IP error”. I’m not so sure this is the case, but no one listened to me when I brought it up.

The meeting was over around noon so afterwards I had a quick lunch with Casey and Anil at Burger King. Following lunch I went straight to the 1pm PAT meeting.

Today’s meeting was different in that we kicked-off the PAT mentoring program in which some exceptional people were picked to eventually replace the current PAT members. Brent did most of the talking in the meeting and I think it went fairly well. He also hinted at some of the potential upcoming changes for the company. I’m not sure how I feel about them, but I think that’s normal. Most people don’t like change so it’s always a little scary. Change is also a very good thing too, so I’m trying to keep an open mind.

After that meeting, I participated in a bridge call to work on the system test changes. I had to do most of the work since we were changing configurations on the tuxedo side.

Shortly after we wrapped this up, I had to leave early. The sheetrock guys are coming out today to look at my dining-room to examine what exactly needs to be done. They are supposed to show up at 4pm, so I left work at 3:30pm.

When I got home (about 4:05pm) they were already there waiting for me. The two guys looked around and determined that water was leaking into the bay-window ceiling area from the bricks underneath the upstairs bedroom window. They pointed out that the bricks near the window were not properly sealed. The guy also told me that he’s seen this same problem with seven other houses within this property.

They didn’t do any work today but asked about coming over tomorrow at 4:30pm to do the work. That sounded great to me. They are going to take down a large portion of the ceiling sheetrock in the dining-room, replace the insulation, spray anti-mold stuff, and replace the sheetrock. They are also, of course, going to properly seal the bricks and test for any more leaking. The guy promised me that I won’t be able to see where they replaced the sheetrock and if I do, he will come back and do it over.

I was watching a TiVoed episode of The Screen Savers and they highlighted a cool website that has archives of very old maps. It’s all free and there are some cool-looking high-resolution scans of some of these maps. I did some digging around and found some fun old maps of Kauai. I emailed them to Larry.

(An excerpt from a Map of Kauai from 1837)

There were some problems in Integration test early this morning, so Casey and Alex and Sameer were working late getting the bugs fixed. They finally completed the fix and called me to see if I could build it. I took care of the build with no problem.

Jen called to catch up on things. I asked if she wanted company and she declined, stating that she has a lot of work to get done and can’t be disturbed. This sort of made me sad because I didn’t view myself as an annoyance to her and thought that I would be able to help. I guess I was wrong. She called back a few minutes later to apologize for snapping at me about coming over. She asked if I could come over a little later and I promised that I would.

She’s been under a lot of stress lately with school wrapping up. She’s got a lot of final projects to do as well as tests, and on top of that work has been pretty busy. Unfortunately for me this means that she’s been more grumpy than usual lately and has been a challenge to keep a good attitude about things.

What concerned me is that she doesn’t even want me around when she’s busy and stressed. In the future when a busy/stressful situation like this arises, will she want me to ‘disappear’ for a while until things are back under control? It seems that the boyfriend should be supportive and helpful - not simply sent away.

Around 9:30pm I packed up my things and undertook the trek to Jen’s house. When I arrived she was working on her presentation. It looked really good. I sat with her in the living room while she explained the different parts to me. I must have forgotten to eat dinner earlier, so I used Jen’s George Foreman grill to make some grilled ham & cheese sandwiches. I was hungry so I had five.

During the evening Jen pointed out that something seemed strange and that I was ‘acting funny’. I did want to talk with her about how I was feeling but wanted to wait until she was done with her work. She continued to insist that something was wrong. I don’t know how she could tell. I thought I was acting quite naturally.

Finally before bed we talked. I explained how I was feeling in regards to the situation and that I wanted to be there to help her, not seen as a distraction. She berated me for not speaking up sooner and that I need to let her know whenever she does something that bothers me. I don’t see that working too well when she’s in a grumpy mood, but she assured me to be up-front with her. I guess I’ll give that a try, but I don’t think I’m very good at it.

Typical Tuesday

When I went out to my car to leave Jen’s house this morning I could hardly believe that it was the middle of summer. It was actually pretty cold outside! Actually, it was cool and misty. It felt great. I can’t wait for fall to arrive.

I took an alternate route to work because of an accident on 575. This turned out to be a good move as it only took me an hour to get to work when normally from Jen’s house that time of the morning it takes about 1.5 hours.

As soon as I got into work I created a graph illustrating the impact of some recent DB2 buffer pool changes. The results were inconclusive. I sent the graph out to all interested parties but left it up to the readers to draw their own conclusions.

I worked pretty furiously before my 10am core team meeting to get the bugfix that I built last night loaded into integration test.

The core team meeting today was fairly uneventful, but afterwards a few of us had a worthwhile discussion regarding the problems in system test. We’re planning on trying a new test next Monday.

I chatted a little with Craig today. He reminded me, again, to send him the info on Xbox modchips. He’s been up since 4am today working on a speech for his communications class. We caught up on a few things and I encouraged him to come visit once the semester is over.

Alex, Casey, and I went to Blanchard’s for lunch today. I had the usual: Philly Chicken sandwich with no mushrooms and a soft drink. They recently switched to Pepsi products (yuck) so I had a Dr. Pepper. It tasted funny. I think they put too much carbonated water in it (fountain drink). I also had two great cake doughnuts.

About thirty minutes before I was going to leave today for the sheetrock work at 4:30pm, I got a call from the guy doing the work. He apologized profusely and asked if I could reschedule. He’s going to call back at some point to reschedule.

Carole is going to be out of the office the rest of the week, so she was walking around trying to figure out if she has everything in order. With the latest fix we loaded into Integration, everything seems to be running great.

This evening I didn’t get a whole lot done. I need to be more productive in the evenings. I waste too much time doing nothing. I burned a couple of CDs for Dad that I need to FedEx tomorrow. I grilled some sausages for dinner and it was pretty good. I also worked on my journal some.

driv3r

It was a fairly slow day today. The high-point at work was the weekly afternoon ‘PAT’ meeting. Today we went over a conceptual architecture document for some database changes. It was pretty straightforward.

After work I played the new game, Driv3r. I never played Grant Theft Auto, but I understand it’s very similar to that game. It’s a lot of fun! You can run around and carjack anyone you want and then wreck havock with the car (or truck, or bus, or semi, or motorcycle, etc) throughout the city. I enabled the cheat codes which prevent my character from dying or the car from exploding.

Jen came over and we had spinach nuggets for dinner. Jen pointed out that my two indoor plants were looking rather parched, so we took them outside and gave them a thorough soaking. Watering them inside didn’t seem to do much. The water would go straight through the soil and didn’t seem to stick around to keep the plant nourished.

I showed Jen my new Xbox game. I don’t think she was too impressed. I was happily demonstrating the fact that the main character can shoot people in their cars as they drive by. If you’re good enough you’ll hit the driver and he will slump over the steering-wheel and the car will slowly roll to a stop. Then, you can pull the dead driver out and take the car. Another fun moment I had was when I carjacked a large dump-truck and sped along a crowded sidewalk and mowed people down. I thought it was great fun (for a video game) but Jen didn’t seem to think so. I explained to her that the game makers were trying to a ‘Teen’ rating so they didn’t include any blood. However, they still got a ‘Mature’ rating probably due to the freedom to shoot civilians and run people over.

take me out to the ballgame

Work today was pretty hectic. We have a ‘team-building’ exercise today in which went to see a Braves game at 1pm. There were some last-minute changes to get code changes into system test as well as integration test.

Alex worked on these changes and as soon as he checked them in, I quickly began the build. I worked quickly and efficiently to get the build done in as little time as possible.

Just as I finished the build and activated it into system test, Alex told me he had another change! He changed his mind about one of the things he needed included, so I had to back it out. He didn’t think this was a big deal, so I had to explain to him that since we package all of the libraries together, I had to start all over again.

I was pretty steamed because the whole build process is pretty time-consuming and I was worried that I would not be finished in time to make the baseball game. As I worked on getting it built as quickly as possible, I mentally prepared myself for skipping the game. To my surprise everything went smoothly as I frantically worked to get the code built and deployed. There were no snags and I got it activated in system test with a few minutes to spare before people were leaving.

Brian and I left at the same time and I followed him to Turner Field. He led me to a $10 pay parking lot (apparently they all cost that around the stadium).

We were the first ones there from our group so we got some lunch. Brian and I each had a cheeseburger. At least I think it was supposed to be a cheeseburger. It didn’t really taste like beef and it didn’t really look like beef. The burger and a soft-drink was about $9. Brian only took a couple of bites out of his and decided that it might not be a good idea to eat.

It took a while for people to arrive. Originally thirty people got tickets to come to the game. However we only had about thirteen people show up. Alex brought his whole family (wife and four boys). Carole (who is on vacation) brought her family. Anil brought his daughter. I spoke at length with Steve Crowgey about his recent trip to Ireland.

He got me stoked about going there. I’m trying to find a fun place to take Jen for a short vacation after she finishes school and Ireland may be fun. Steve told me that they never made any arrangements but just drove through little towns and whenever they found a town they liked, they would stay at a B&B - there was always vacancy.

During the game I got a page from John S. regarding some problems in the integration environment. I tried to call him but had trouble getting a clear signal with my cell phone. I paged him back asking him to check with Mike D. from middleware to see about assistance with the tuxedo domain.

The game was a typical baseball game. It was crowded and hot but the company was fun and I took a few photos. I used my fisheye lens to snap some photos of our group. Unfortunately we weren’t all sitting in the same section and it was difficult to jockey for a good position to take the pictures.

I left the game during the 9th inning. The game was tied but I didn’t want to get stuck in too much traffic. I drove home via downtown & I75. Traffic was pretty thick despite being only 4pm. During the drive home I spoke with John who didn’t have luck resolving the problems in the integration environment. I promised him that I would look at it when I got home.

When I arrived home, I saw that my package containing the DVD+R’s arrived. I set out immediately to use them and test out the hacked 8x +R burn speed of my drive. It worked great and I backed up all of my photos through the end of 2003. I switched to RAW around that time and my albums (especially Hawaii) are so huge that I’ll have to break them up across multiple DVD’s. It would have been a huge pain to do this with CDR’s since they hold less space.

I also played a couple of new games for the Xbox that I got: Spider Man 2 and Van Helsing. I didn’t play for long but Spider Man 2 looks pretty fun. I can’t imagine this, but it’s pretty hard for me to get into games anymore. I never thought I would feel this way.

Maybe it’s because I had a drink on an empty stomach or something else, but I got a killer migraine headache this evening. I took three Advil and laid down and only after a couple of hours (I fell asleep) did it go away. I woke up pretty groggy, had a quick bite to eat and then went to bed.

tuxedo problems

Before I left for work this morning I got a page from John about the problems in the integration environment. I logged in and looked around. There was something funky going on. I couldn’t get into tmadmin to issue tuxedo commands and nothing was working.

I tried various things and eventually decided that I should completely take down the domain and start over. Because I couldn’t shut down the services, I had to kill all of the processes and then I cleaned out the ipcs owned
